noviembre de 20242 night stay. Pick up was super easy, if you get car sick make sure to take an antisickness tablets- the road gets snakey. Kindred elephant sanctuary is very well organised, as soon as we arrived we were showed our home stay and base, a presentation about the Karen people and the elephants. For the evening we cooked with our home stay + basket weaving & buy hand made cotton bags/ scarves from the local ladies. next day breakfast was cereal/toast/ boiled eggs. suggest bringing own milk for cereals instead of water/ for tea. + hike snacks. We had a local guide from the village along with the team lead us on the hike. The area is magical & it took us about an hour to find the elephants. You get to sit & be in awe &observe their natural behaviour. next day was similar + Karen lesson &teaching English to the nursery. The team have truly built a sanctuary. learnt so much & appreciate the hard work and research to help educate tourists & the government. It’s a step in the right direction!

marzo de 2024Pros: the people were very nice, it was a very authentic experience far away from the city, everyone involved worked very hard to try and make it work.
-I would not recommend this for people with less than a week time in Chiang Mai, this tour is 2 days and I think the 2 days may have been better used.
- for people to set their expectations realistically please read. It is a far ride in the van, but that was pretty nice to see Thailand, stopped at little markets for snacks and fresh fruit, we went during dry season (march) so when we got to the village area it was very dusty and brown every where, have to ride in a truck and some people in the bed of a truck down bumpy dirt and rock roads for about 20 min to get to village. The village is very small, only a couple streets, all dirt, no chairs or tables or couches to sit on, eat on the floor, eat rice and eggs and little bit of veggies for the meals. At the village you will sit and listen to a couple hours of presentations about rules and regulations and what the kindred spirit foundation is trying to do. We walked around the village thinking maybe there would be people with little homemade goods and “shops” to view and interact with the village but there isn’t. They do have electricity so there are lights in the homes but no TVs or anything. Recommend to bring a book to read as there isn’t much to do there. In the morning we got up and the hike was a couple miles gaining about 2000 ft in elevation, I would not recommend this to older people or people who aren’t used to hiking a lot, it’s not easy. We only saw 2 elephants from about 100-200 meters away, in the forest, unable to view very well. They don’t let you get close, which we respect, these are wild animals. Then we rode in the pickup trucks on bumpy roads for a while to a coffee shop, most places don’t have ice and don’t have beer, so don’t expect that. Then we went home on the trucks to van.
If you want to get close to an elephant and touch an elephant, this isn’t the tour for you.
If you want to have drinks and entertainment, this isn’t the tour for you.
If you want comfortable beds and seating and comfy housing, this isn’t for you.
If you don’t want to hike a bunch through hills and forest, this isn’t for you.
If you want to get close to elephants, this isn’t for you.
If you want to see something far from the city and have a humbling experience, this is for you.
