I had a great half-day experience with Ryan, showing me the birds in the Front Range of the Rockies. He is friendly, personable, and adapts well to the customer’s expectations. I am a backyard birder from Georgia, so Ryan’s knowledge of the Colorado wild fauna and flora, birds’ calls, and their migratory habits was so interesting. This experience inspired me to take my own birding up a level.

My first time birding felt like a fun Easter egg hunt, thanks to my easygoing guide, Ryan.

Ryan uses his knowledge of bird habitats, his senses, and a Bluetooth speaker to make locating and luring the fast-flying raptors a breeze for him. As a first-time birder, I found it a bit of a challenge in the beginning to find the little critters high and hidden in the treetops as I fumbled around with my binoculars, but things eventually got easier for me towards the end of our trip. We ended up spotting several species of birds through the meadow and up the mountain, including a rare glimpse of a Pine Grosbeak.

Ryan gets extra bonus points for explaining how the weather affects the overall Colorado landscape; educating me on the local flora around us, such as the aspen tree; using a laser pointer to point out the precise location of a bird he sees on a tree branch; and emailing me after the trip with a list of the birds we saw, along with useful info and resources to help me continue my birding journey elsewhere.

Ryan was communicative and friendly. He went out of his way to pick me up from a hotel outside his pickup zone (for a small fee), which made things so easy. He is incredibly knowledgeable about birds, animals and literally anything that you will come into contact with on your hike. He knew immediately from sound and sight what bird we were spotting, and shared all of his incredible knowledge as we hiked along the trail.

I was not quite prepared for the challenge of the hike itself. I am a novice birder and hiker, and had no experience with high altitude hiking. I will admit that this was very physically challenging for me, but Ryan and the folks on our hike were kind and courteous, and never made me feel weak for needing to stop often to catch my breath. Ryan encouraged me along the way, reminding me how close we were, and how worth it the summit would be.

Words cannot describe the feeling I had at the summit. I feel like I conquered one of my inner demons by putting one foot in front of the other to make it to the top. The view and the stillness at the top was so worth everything that came before.

I also got to add some incredible rare birds to my life list. I highly recommend Ryan as a guide!
