打狗鐵道故事館的前身為1900年縱貫鐵道南部線通車時，在北邊約800公尺開業的「打狗停車場」，而停車場為日本明治時代對火車站的稱呼。當年此地仍是一片汪洋，臺灣總督府利用築港挖砂填出一塊海埔地，直到1908年縱貫線全線通車時，才將第一代的打狗車站搬至目前的位置。
