Just a thirty minute drive. "The Canadian Tulip Festival was established to celebrate the historic Royal gift of tulips from the Dutch to Canadians immediately following the Second World War as a symbol of international friendship. The Festival preserves the memorable role of the Canadian troops in the liberation of the Netherlands and Europe, as well as commemorates the birth of Dutch Princess Margriet in Ottawa during World War II—the only royal personage ever born in Canada." Wander over to the Rideau Canal – Ontario’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site – and stroll along its scenic banks which are lined with flower beds. The Canadian Tulip Festival’s main site, Commissioners Park, is a large green space located along the Rideau Canal. However, it’s over 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) away from downtown Ottawa along the canal pathways. You may prefer to bike or bus to get there (see details below). Once at Commissioners Park, you’ll be surrounded by many large flower beds filled with over 300,000 tulips in bloom – all within a one-kilometer path! Dozens of different varieties of tulips are planted each year.
