“Would you like to visit heaven?” “Sure.” “Fine. But to go there you should die first.” You are sure to yell “Go to hell.” There is a short cut, though. It is as close to heaven as you can get it without dying. You have a pocket sized Heaven. This guy Lt. Coaker , knows how to put his name on history with least effort. While his boss was breaking his back digging a pond and calling it is Kodai Lake (No body knows it as Hendry lake), this guy silently built a 1 KM stretch (1873) at scenic spot and put his name on it. Smart B....... What is unique about this road? While you have Viewpoints and viewpoints all over the hills, this is view road. If you are lucky, you can view far as Dolphin's Nose in the south, the valley of the Pambar River in the southeast, Periyakulam town and even the city of Madurai. All from this road itself as you walk along. Keep your camera handy. If you are even more lucky, then you will be a witness to a fascinating rare phenomenon called “Brocken specter”. This happens when a person can see his shadow on the clouds with a rainbow halo. This occurs when the sun is behind the viewer and clouds and mist are to the front. Now, you know the heaven connection. Go there in the mornings. Afternoons mist sets in. You can peep thro, the telescope for a fee which is as ancient as the walk itself and get disappointed. Technical Information:- Coaker's Walk, 500 metres (1,600 ft) from the bus-stand, constructed by Lt.Coaker in 1872, is a 1-kilometre (3,300 ft) paved pedestrian path running along the edge of steep slopes on the southern side of Kodai. The walk, winding around Mount Nebo, starts in front of the Van Allen hospital, running parallel to the Van Allen Hospital Road and joins the main road beside St.Peter's Church, providing a stunning panoramic view of the plains. The walkway is very well maintained and it's great spot for photography. One side of the walkway is occupied by majestic houses built during colonial period. Timings: 7 AM - 7 PM. Admission fee:- Rs 2, Camera Rs. 5, observatory (admission Rs. 3) with telescope about halfway along.
