This amazing woodland is important for the mosses and lichens that festoon the trees and the impressive granite boulders found on the site. However, this National Nature Reserve of 170ha mainly consists of a model example of the upland heathland and has a wealth of moorland birds. Wistmans Wood is in the Dart river valley and has views of wild Devon that you won't find anywhere else in the country.

Reached after a 30/45 minute walk over rough ground from the small car park at Two Bridges, this small and stunted woodland of 500 year old oak trees is quite something. The trees, mostly stunted by the exposure to Dartmoor weather, are set on the side of a small valley that with a stream running through. The floor of the wood comprises solely of a jumble of lichen and moss covered boulders. Watch your step if venturing within as the rocks are slippery.Best visited early morning, and/or midweek, when you have the place to yourself. Show less

This moss filled grove on Dartmoor is definitely worth a visit as it's otherworldly..... Short walk, with very old pub for refreshments on your return

Wistman Woods on Dartmoor National Park is approximately 5 miles long and on average takes 2 hours to walk. The walking route to Wistman's Wood is easy to follow, it leads north from the small car park; just follow the footpath fingerpost. You'll pass by a small farmstead and then you'll quickly be on open moorland as you walk towards Littaford Tors in the distance. There is also a cream tearoom to be found on the opposite side of the road to the car park. .
