The romantic, beautiful North Yorkshire fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay near Whitby is steeped in history, heritage, legends, smuggling and has some interesting visitor attractions. The tiny settlement of Robin Hood's Bay is one of Britain's most picturesque, most romantic and most beautiful locations. And with it being on the Dinosaur Coast, at low tied is a fossil hunters paradise.

The village was the setting of the fictional village of Aidensfield in the Heartbeat television series set in the 1960s. Many landmarks from the series are recognisable, including the stores, garage/funeral directors, the public house and the railway station. The pub is called the Goathland Hotel, but in the series is The Aidensfield Arms. Many a days have been spent here as a family watching the filming take place.

Probably the smallest pub you've seen for years... It has just two bars with a sweet shop in the middle where time has stood still for generations. This is always visited when in Goathland, but I must warn, the walk isn’t for the faint hearted. The gradient is easily a 1 in 4 and driving is accessible. The parking at the bottom is very tight and at times you may have to wait for a space. They serve hand pulled cask beer, have a simple menu of hot drinks, butties & pies, home-baked scones and there famous beer-cake.

Certainly one for the train enthusiasts. A great little station that is popular with train photographers due to the steam trains that enter and leave the station. This has always been a favourite, and a family journey from Grosmont to Goathland on the steam train never gets old. Unfortunately for 1 person, unless you get a return ticket then you will miss out and will have to drive take the car. For the more enthusiastic train fan, you can visit the Engine Sheds just across the road from the station. Parking is £5 for the day, and if I’m correct is a solid price, so I believe that you can’t pay for a 1 hour visit.

Having been voted the best UK Fish and Chip Restaurant in 2019, Trenchers is a family favourite. Situated just under 1 minutes walk down in Whitby Harbour, Trenchers is a must visit on your vacation. I would book due to the popular demand if you want to eat in, but also with a Takeaway just next door, this is also a popular option.

This is one for the BBQ lovers, and just a short 10 minute journey out of Whitby is Radfords Butchers. This is a family favourite and there hasn’t been a holiday where we have not stopped here for our meat on our way to our holiday home. With the offer of also a deli this really is a must whilst the BBQ is being prepped. This is always tied in with a trip to Bothams of Whitby on our way through to our holiday home as they are next door to one another.

A family favourite for our bread and muffins is Bothams of Whitby. A family run bakery a short 10 minute drive away. Provides the most amazing collection of bread, and ideal for breakfast and picnics on the beach.
