Many artists, novelists and poets have been inspired by the gothic-esque appearance of the abbey including Bram Stoker the author of ‘Dracula’. There is plenty to discover here about the monks who lived here and all visitors to the abbey are all provided with a free audio guide upon arrival, which helps bring the experience to life.

A must see for visitors to Whitby accessed by the famous 199 steps next to the cottage. There's a modern interactive visitor centre and coffee shop, too. Various activities for children during the main holidays.

Currently you have to pre-book, but well worth a visit. English Heritage organise lots of events at the Abbey, which are great if you can catch one.

This English Heritage sight is a must see in Whitby. Located above Whitby and looking out to see the Abbey has a fascinating history. It has been made iconic by virtue of the more recent associations with Bram Stoker's Dracula. Park in the English Heritage carpark up by the abbey or walk up the 199 steps from the town. There is a shop and visitors centre.
