Protesters Falls walking track leads through superb World Heritage rainforest before arriving at spectacular waterfalls in Nightcap National Park. An ideal short walk for families and nature-lovers, it is a 1.4km return walking track (allow 1 - 1.5 hours). As you walk along this easy track, you’ll notice how subtropical bangalow palms and native tamarind give way to towering rainforest giants of yellow carabeen and strangler figs. Listen out for the call of the rose-crowned fruit dove and the barred cuckoo-shrike. You might even see a pademelon darting through the bush. Protestors Falls walking track is about 55 minutes from our property.

Surrounded by rainforest in Nightcap National Park, Mount Nardi picnic area is a birdwatching haven and the starting point for many exhilarating walking tracks. It's a long and winding road through lush rainforest to get to Mount Nardi picnic area, but on arrival you'll know it is well worth it. This picnic area is the highest point in Nightcap National Park, and the view through the clearings of the Northern Rivers district, taking in Lismore and Nimbin, is superb. The cleared, grassy picnic area is surrounded by tall trees, including towering booyong, also known as tulip oak, as well as maidens blush, with its cream flowers that appear in October and November. Its also the starting point for a range of hikes including Mount Matheson loop, Pholis Gap and Nightcap walking tracks. You might see some rainforest locals as youre having lunch as brightly coloured rainforest pigeons are common, as is the tiny eastern yellow robin. Small marsupials like potoroos and pademelons also live in the surrounding forest.

Minyon Falls is one of Byron Bay's hinterland gems! Surrounded by ancient rainforests in Nightcap National Park, the waterfall plunges roughly 100-metres over jarring rhyolite cliffs that were once part of the Tweed Volcano. You can choose from an easier, two-hour return walk to Minyon Grass picnic area or the longer, hard-grade 4-5-hour Minyon Loop Walking Track. The Minyon Grass option takes you to the base of the Falls while the 7.5-km Minyon Loop Walking Track winds through dense rainforest and fern-flanked creeks before arriving at the iconic plunge falls. Either way: be prepared for a fairly steep climb out! Minyon Falls is a 1 hour drive from our property.

There is a historic tavern if you are in need of a spot of lunch after bushwalking! The Channon is also famous for its monthly Craft Market held every 2nd Sunday at the Showgrounds. With over 240 stallholders, there is a great array of handcrafted goods and food vendors. Please note the drive to The Channon is very windy and narrow. Take your time and drive with caution!

Breweries/Distilleries

Nestled in the green caldera surrounding Mt Warning, Husk is a plantation distillery on a beautiful cane and cattle farm, producing high quality rum and gin. Located in Tumbulgum, Husk is a 1 hour drive from our property (near Murwillumbah). If you like a tipple or two, we highly recommend visiting Husk! You can book a tour or just enjoy their cellar door with some tasting paddles. Plus, they have a great range of cocktails! Even if you don't partake, Husk is also great for a bite to eat. It's a bit of a drive to Byron (1.25 hours), but well worth the trip to Stone & Wood. We'd recommend making a day of it and exploring the rest of what Byron has to offer (beaches, shops, food, lighthouse walk)! Stone & Wood has built an impressive cellar door, which showcases their beer/cider/hard seltzer range... We're a big fan of their Counter Culture label too! Plus they have some tasty bites to complement a schooner (or two!).

Cape Byron Distillery is well known for its Brookie's range, which started off with gin and has now an extensive range of other tipples - Negroni, Moonshine, Macadamia Liqueur & Premixes. We are huge fans of the fact that the distillery sources and uses local produce in their products, particularly native Australian bush foods. They have a premixed Finger Lime Gin & Tonic (whoop!) and their Sloe Gin has Davidson Plum. The Dry Gin is a smorgasbord of native Australian botanicals. Highly recommend! The distillery is near Byron, so it is over an hour's drive from our property. We recommend making a day of it in Byron if you head that way!

The little town of Federal is one of our favourite places to visit! Lunch at Doma is WELL worth the hour long drive (as well as the beautiful scenery you see along the way). Doma serves up rustic, home-styled Japanese dishes in a relaxed outdoor setting. Try the halloumi burger (Nat's favourite) or their fresh, cone-shaped hand rolls. Doma isn't licensed, but feel free to pick up a beer or two from the General Store next door. We also recommend visiting Ruby & Frank for beautiful hand-made ceramic goods, The Hills Emporium for homewares, Moonshine Coffee for your daily fix, and finish it all off with some yummy gelato from Benilato!
