“Originally called Church on the Rock, the chapel was built in the late 1830 to serve Wadmalaw plantation owners who spent their summers in Rockville to escape the heat and threat of malaria. Unlike many nearby churches, Grace Episcopal was spared during the Civil War…Following the devastating Sea Islands Hurricane of 1893, the chapel was used as a meeting place by American Red Cross founder Clara Barton, who came to Rockville to organize recovery efforts.” (B Coffey 2018) This chapel also boasts a beautiful Tiffany window.

Stop at the Store

Rockville on Wadmalaw Island is a beautiful and peaceful destination, perfect for a laid-back getaway. However, be aware, you are about 12 minutes away from mainstream grocery, gas, and convenience stores. It’s important to grab necessary items before leaving the crossroads (Maybank Hwy/Main Rd). While there is a charming, old-timey store less than a mile away from The Hideout— Hum Grocery— they only serve lunch and carry essentials (Tues-Sat).
