In the City Palm House, you can spend a nice time walking along paths winding among exotic vegetation, strolling along Japanese bridges, resting on benches and listening to birds singing. And all this surrounded by huge palm trees, banana trees, cacti and colorful, fragrant flowers....Just take a nice walk from Rynek, along Zwycięstwa street that will take you to the Palmenhaus

On the night of August 31, 1939, the Germans dressed in Polish uniforms faked an attack on a radio tower. It should be mentioned that Gliwice was a German city at the time, located on the border with Poland. The Gliwice provocation, i.e. a false attack by the Germans on their own outpost, gave the Third Reich an excuse to start an invasion of Poland. The consequence of these events was the outbreak of World War II. Interesting fact: The radio station in Gliwice is made of larch wood and is 111 meters high, which makes it the tallest wooden structure in Europe and one of the tallest facilities of this type in the world. Must see!

In addition to visiting the Market Square (Rynek) it is also worth walking the streets of Gliwice's old town. The old town is small, but you will find some architectural gems and interesting monuments, incl. remains of the old city walls, the Piast Castle, the church of All the Saints. While walking, you can visit one of the local ice cream places like Kawiarnia z Pasją or Zimy Drań. Artisan ice cream is something you must try while in Gliwice!

City information

All you need to know about Gliwice - explore, have fun and come back!
Gliwice is a city with a rich and quite turbulent history, which over the centuries changed its nationality and passed from hand to hand. Both Poles, Czechs, Austrians, Prussians and Germans ruled here. These influences are still visible today in the architecture and spatial layout of the city, thanks to which it has its own unique charm and character. Gliwice was granted municipal rights before 1276, which makes it one of the oldest cities in Upper Silesia. For comparison, Katowice, which is the capital of the region, officially became a city only in 1865, i.e. almost 600 years later.
