Stawell enjoyed a rich gold mining boom during the Victorian Gold Rush days. However, while mining ceased in 1920, the Magdala Mine opened in the 1980s and is still operating as one of Victoria's largest gold mines. The town centre originally developed along Longfield Street (Western Highway), close to Pleasant Creek where gold was first discovered in 1853. Along Longfield Street is the old shire hall office (built in 1866) and a few doors down is Stawell's original courthouse (1860) which now operates as a local history museum.

Local Grampians Wineries
Established in 1970, Montara is captivating with its panorama of plains, mountains, vines, and old-world charm of the Ararat gold rush days. Situated 200 kilometres west of Melbourne in the Grampians region, it is a feast for the eyes and the spirit. HISTORY The abandoned mineshaft at our vineyard in Ararat will forever commemorate the fortunate discovery of the Canton Lead, one of the largest shallow alluvial goldfields in history. It was serendipitously discovered in 1857 by 700 southern Chinese miners who stopped in the area to replenish their water supplies, and triggered the beginning of the great Ararat Rush. After the demise of the gold rush in 1858, two Frenchmen, Messrs. Blampied and Trouette, planted vines in the region at Great Western. Shortly after, Joseph and Henry Best also established vineyards there, using ex-miners to dig underground drives to house the wines, and the sparkling wine industry of Australia was born… …Over the years the district continued to flourish as several wine growers followed in Best’s footsteps. In 1970, the McRae family planted the first Montara vineyards on the eastern slopes of Mount Chalambar, a site chosen for its frost-free location. The inaugural Montara vintages were released in 1977. Today the Grampians is one of Australia’s most historic wine regions, with over 150 years of winemaking across a wide range of varieties and styles. Location: 76 Chalambar Rd Ararat, Victoria 3377 Winery: (03) 5352 4798 Our cellar door is open for tasting and sales- Saturday & Sunday, 12noon – 5pm.

With viticulture background and a strong family tradition the vineyards were planted by Dino and Michael Fratin in 1998, thirty years after their father Serge and his brothers Don and Lino established the well renowned Mt Langi Ghiran Vineyards. Shiraz cuttings were taken from Mt Langi Ghiran and planted with the initial idea of selling the grapes to neighbouring wineries, but with the exceptional quality of the grapes and encouragement from a family friend and local winemaker, the brothers followed in their father’s footsteps making wine under the Fratin Brothers label. Serge still oversees the vineyard operations today combining years of viticulture expertise and careful nurturing of the vines to continually produce fruit of premium quality. The 3.2 hectare Grampians Estate vineyard grows shiraz and chardonnay. The first 1.6 hectares of vines were planted in 1989. In 1994 a group of friends banded together to create Grampians Estate Wine Company to further develop the vineyard and commence Grampians wine production. Vintages of Australian shiraz and chardonnay ensued from 1995, the quality and quantity of which gradually improved as vineyard management and industry knowledge grew. In 2004 Tom and Sarah Guthrie bought out the company and today continue to build on the great achievements of those years. The Grampians Estate wine label is significant for a variety of reasons. It features the classic Australian painting Land of the Golden Fleece by Sir Arthur Streeton with Major Mitchell Plateau, the highest part of the Grampians apart from Mount William, overlooking a typical Australian landscape. Streeton, a member of the famous Heidelberg School of painters, referred to this 1926 painting as his greatest work. The Grampians Estate vineyard is located on the north side of the Muirhead Range in front of the Plateau, whilst the painting itself was painted from Yarram Park, a neighbouring property where Sarah Guthrie grew up.
