Mljet National Park was established in 1960. as the first institutionally protected marine area at the Adriatic Sea. Primary mission of the NP is to ensure sustainable management of natural values, take a care of the rich cultural heritage and to ensure unique experience to any visitor. National Park covers 1/3 of the island and there you will be able to swim in the two lakes, take a long walk/hike/cycle around the lakes, visit 12th century Benedictine monastery or Roman palace form 3th century.

The legend says that Odysseus has a shipwreck on the islet Ogiran in front of the Mljet and found a shelter in the cave on the island shore. Exhausted from the stormy sea with lost ship crew, vulnerable Odysseus was protectd by nymph Calypso which he fell in love with and spent seven years on the island idyll, until Zeus called him back home. The Odysseus cave was once a natural habitat of the Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus), one of the rarest mammal in the world.

Saplunara on Mljet Island may be the last hidden jewel left in the Adriatic. The name Saplunara comes from the Latin word, sabalum, that means sand. As the largest remaining coastal sand habitat in Croatia, Saplunara hosts several plant species that exist nowhere else in Croatia. As such, it is considered a "protected area" with signs begging you not to litter or camp. A forest of Aleppo pines and junipers stretches from the sandy shore inland where there is a small settlement.
