Locals know Saplunara for its beautiful nature and sandy beaches. As more visitors come to Mljet and Saplunara more people know about this hidden beauty. Saplunara is only place on Mljet with sandy soil and sandy beaches. 4 sandy beaches and 3 beautiful bays are what makes Saplunara special. The sand is believed to origin from Africa borught here with great southern winds and sorms. It is so common in Saplunara and its surroundings that people even plant and garden in sand. Just until late 1950s there were no people living in Saplunara as it was only place for Yugoslavian (later Croatian) army forces (on the Saplunara hill up to this day) and place for some fisherman to spend night in the old shacks by the sea. Mljet is known as "The Green Island" or "The Greenest Croatian Island" and it is very visible in Spalunara as forests make most of its terrain. Local people here know many plant species that gow around and are edible, very healthy and use it in their Mediterranean diet everyday.

Saplunara and Limuni Beach is perfect if you like sand peaches that look alike the ones in Mexico or another exotic place but that are smaller and much cleaner as well as the crystal clear sea.

Saplunara on Mljet Island may be the last hidden jewel left in the Adriatic. The name Saplunara comes from the Latin word, sabalum, that means sand. As the largest remaining coastal sand habitat in Croatia, Saplunara hosts several plant species that exist nowhere else in Croatia. As such, it is considered a "protected area" with signs begging you not to litter or camp. A forest of Aleppo pines and junipers stretches from the sandy shore inland where there is a small settlement.

Sandy beaches in Saplunara are amazing. One of them, beach Blace is stunning and it will leave you breathless as it did for many years to the fans and contestants of TV shows The Survivor and Naked on the Beach.
