Aradale is Australia's largest abandoned lunatic asylum. Opened in 1867 as Ararat Lunatic Asylum, this building housed tens of thousands of people described as "lunatics", "idiots" and "imbeciles" - some of them described as the worst lunatics in the British Empire.

A stunning Art Deco designed cinema that has recently been upgraded to state of the art digital projectors, 3 screens (one insanely huge), comfy movie lounge seating and same day movie releases as the big city cinemas! Best of all, it’s $12 a ticket!! And if you ask really nicely, Barry the owner will personally deliver your hot chocolate / coffee during the movie.
Interesting fact: The Astor Theatre, Ararat is of historical significance as one of the largest purpose-built cinemas in rural Victoria (capacity nearly 1000 patrons).

These include aboriginal artefacts, thousands of photographs (mostly of local interest), everyday items used in the home and in local businesses, and collections relating to local individuals such as Stan Kelly (botanical artist), Mary Norman-Bail (educator and artist), and Shane Kelly (five-time Olympic cyclist).

I stole this review from a website which pretty much sums it up.. "Good Cafe style food, selection of wines and beers, vegetarian options, friendly happy staff. The coffee's good and the atmosphere relaxed. Well worth the stop".

"The tasting room, decorated with historic artefacts, was warm and inviting on a cold winter's day. Before tasting the wines in Best's 150th year, we set off to do the self-guided tour of the historic cellars. This was very interesting and informative. The staff were friendly and knowledgable. We especially enjoyed the Bin O Shiraz. There are outdoor tables and chairs where you could enjoy a cheese platter with a glass of wine on a warmer day."
