Square Plate Deli has wonderful food and deserts with a touch of German influence. Fresh and healthy. NOTE! They are only open for LUNCH on the weekdays from 11am-2:30pm. This is the only restaurant in town that has these hours. I suggest hitting them for lunch and any of the others for breakfast or dinner.

LEA LOU CO-OP: Saturday night you can dance to live music in the Lea Lou Dance Hall. You’ll find us on the southeast corner of Historic Mason Square in the famous Grosse Hardware building dating back to the early 1900’s. Out back is a fire pit area and picnic tables under the trees and stars of Mason’s dark skies (Mason is an official dark sky county). The sports area has table tennis, big screen TV and more. The old lumber storage barn is now a special event space for parties, weddings and outdoor concerts.

Fort Mason was established in 1851, and was Robert E. Lee's last command post in the U.S. Army. Albert Sidney Johnson, John Bell Hood, and Edmund Kirby Smith also served here prior to their service in the Civil War. During the war, the Confederacy controlled the fort, but it remained virtually unmanned. Families often sought shelter and protection within its walls during frequent Indian raids. Today, visitors can explore the reproduction officers' quarters at the Fort Mason Museum.

Mason’s newest museum addition is aptly named, the Mason Square Museum. It is a more compact version of the Mason County Historical Museum, but with its own unique exhibits (including the largest blue topaz found in the United States).

Parks & Nature

Of the many caves in the Mexican free-tails’ summer range, the Eckert James River Cave is one of the few that satisfies the exacting demands as a nursery. In April 1990, The Nature Conservancy of Texas (TNC) and Bat Conservation International (BCI) acquired the cave, partly as a gift from Richard Eckert and Virginia Eckert Garrett and partly by purchase. The common goals of TNC and BCI are to protect the bats and their habitat and to provide access for the public to visit and witness the dramatic nightly emergence in a manner consistent with protection and safety of the bats and the visitors. Thursday through Sunday evenings, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., throughout the season (mid-May to mid-Oct)

Comanche Creek is a tidy 9-hole layout that rolls through Fort Mason Park, the same pleasant setting that is home to Mason’s football stadium, community center, and rodeo arena. This is a simple track with minimal hazards that will build the confidence of the average golfer, and is a great place for those just learning the game. The course is well maintained and the fairways and greens are in excellent condition.
