Golfers meanwhile are in for a treat, with the prestigious Royal Porthcawl Golf Club lying just north of the town. Beaches Sandy Bay, or as it's known locally, Coney Beach, is a busy beach which has become a magnet for bathers, surfers and families with youngsters. Dusted with fine golden sand, and with donkey rides, bouncy castles and trampolines on offer, Coney Beach is a family favourite. If the kids are getting cranky, keep them occupied at much-loved Coney Beach Pleasure Park with thrilling rides such as the Megablitz, an arcade, shooting gallery, sideshows and dodgems. Nestled between Rhych Point and Newton Point on a low limestone headland near Swansea is Trecco Bay, a large, predominantly sandy beach with excellent water quality. Trecco Bay Beach is an idyllic, unspoilt Blue Flag beach that offers great surfing conditions. With lifeguard service provided between April through to September, it's the perfect place to take the kids for a safe swim or paddle. Sheltered by the harbour, it's also ideal for surfing at mid-to-high tide.

These atmospheric castle ruins are all that remain of this once sprawling fortress, but they continue to be a romantic spot filled with mystery. Dating back to Norman times, the castle was heavily rebuilt throughout the 14th century before falling into disrepair, however, there are still many sights to appreciate. Discover the remains of a striking 3 storey keep, dramatic curtain walls and an imposing gatehouse. A truly interesting slice of medieval history.
