Food Scene

Smack dab in the middle of Downtown Nashville is The Stillery. If it’s busy, they actually take your cell phone number so you can peruse Broadway while you wait for a table. Let me just order for you, here: get the mac and cheese topped with hot chicken. Get the steak and shrooms pizza (it has blue cheese on it too, it’s sooooo decadent!) They even have a hot chicken pizza! I’d order one of the specialty whiskey cocktails too, as it’s called The Stillery for a reason. Also, I would recommend this be your last stop of the evening, unless you want to carry around doggy bags of leftovers. The portions are huge!

The reason people come here is to try the biscuits, but the reason they come back is for the heaping portions of real Tennessee southern food, just like granny made. Anything you can imagine: fried chicken, turnip greens, biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak...executed perfectly, down to the last bite of homemade banana pudding. It can get a bit busy on the weekends with long waits during breakfast time, but once sat, you’ll have a mountain of the most buttery biscuits this side of the Mason Dixon. Oh, and they’re served up with three housemade jams that are TO DIE FOR.

Hot chicken is the quintessential dish of Music City and the original can be found at Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack. It’s exactly what it sounds like: it’s hot (spicy) chicken, skillet-fried, and served in a shack. The cool part about Prince’s HCS is that you can pick a level of spicy- MEDIUM IS PRETTY SPICY, but you asked for hot chicken and that’s what you’re gonna get! The accoutrements that accompany the hot chicken is cool flavors: mustard potato salad, pickles… FYI, there is a huge crowd during regular dining hours so be prepared to wait for a table. Also, there is no restrooms, but there’s a huge shopping center with bathrooms across the street. They’re open til 4am on weekends too!

Drinks & Nightlife

Not a tourist trap bar like the rest on Broadway! Great live bands playing all night- what better to do in Music City than dance to some real Tennessee honky tonk? This place is dirt cheap and has burgers, hot dogs, tons of fried foods, and stiff drinks. I highly recommend popping in to Robert’s Western World for a honky tonk filled evening. No cowboy hat required.

Sightseeing

One of the most arguably beautiful plantations that still stands today is the Belle Meade. There are guided tours around the grounds and through the main house, the stables and slave houses in the back. The family used to breed thoroughbred horses so it’s not a crop plantation like you might imagine. The Belle Meade family also makes blackberry wine so there is a small wine tasting that is included in your tour ticket. Also note: you cannot bring your strollers inside the house on the tour, so be prepared to carry your child which is probably about a 45 minute duration.

A full-scale replica of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, complete with a 42 foot tall statue of Athena, remains to be the centerpiece for the Centennial Park which lies just west of Downtown Nashville. Nashville was already dubbed “The Athens of the South” historically, for being, at the time, an innovative city filled with educational institutions at the time of it’s construction in 1897. It is an amazing sight and is a must-see for anyone traveling to Nashville. Tickets to get in the Parthenon itself are only $6 for adults, and there’s so much to do in and around the park, you could spend an entire day here.

Entertainment & Activities

The area that surrounds what is known as Music Square in Downtown Nashville is called Music Row and is any music lover’s DREAM. Aside from shopping, bars and restaurants, there’s the Car Collector’s Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame, The Johnny Cash Museum…. I could go on forever. You can spend a week at Music Row and still not see everything that they have to offer. I highly recommend visiting Studio B, which is the famous recording studio owned by the record label RCA; they offer tours and have a fascinating history that would definitely be music to your ears!! Get it?
