Beside great hiking and many ruins there is amazing trails for mountain biking in Sand Canyon. It's a big part of Canyon of the Ancients National Monument and the nice part is that it's just about 5 miles further down the canyon. When you leave the cabin or bungalow and hit the paved road, make a right, away from town. In about 5 miles you'll see the parking area on the right and if you were inclined to stop at Sutcliffe Winery it's on the opposite side of the road a few driveways down. They are open 7 days a week noon to 5pm. Great way to end the day!

Sand Canyon is located southwest of Cortez in McElmo Canyon. Beautiful red rock cliffs and ruins with hiking/biking trails available most of the year.

If you ride mountain bikes you have to do this out and back. It's like going to Mesa Verde and being the only one there. There is a South and North trailhead.

Kid friendly ruins just a few miles outside of Cortez. Great for hiking or mountain biking year round! Visit ancient ruins!
