This small but beautiful castle was one of Henry VIII's finest coastal forts built to defend the country from invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire. Definitely worth a visit.

One of Henry VIII's finest coastal fortresses, built of local Portland stone and perfectly preserved in a waterfront location overlooking Portland harbour, venue for the 2012 Olympic sailing events. Standing right on the waters edge, this unusual fan-shaped castle has superb views of the shimmering seascapes across Portland harbour and the distant Dorset Coastline. Waves lap gently close to its walls making it a magical setting for summer celebrations in marquees. With a lovely contemporary garden, and Tudor Kitchen, which can be warmed by a real fire in winter or in the Upper Great Hall with its beautiful oak benches and original Tudor floor.

Thought to be Henry VIII favourite castle… looking over Portland to protect England against the French and Spanish fleets. Just 4 miles from Weymouth.

Overlooking Portland Harbour in Dorset stands one of Henry VIII’s finest coastal forts, built in the early 1540s to protect against French and Spanish invasion. Today it provides a great day out for visitors and its audio tour, included in the admission price, tells of the castle’s 450-year history
