If you have time, this is a good way to get into the mountains, by the eizan line leaving from Demachiyanagi station. Impressive old cedar trees. There is a nice (and steep) walking circuit in the hills that connects a few shrines/temples, plus some tradiitional on-river dining places and a rather expensive onsen.
