Just accross the apartment. Great local place to have breakfast or lunch (delicious "menú del día") and one of the top 10 bars in the city to have an authentic Valencian "almuerzo popular" experience (the "almuerzo", a mid-morning snack, is very typical in Valencia. Theoretically, the intent of this meal is to serve as a snack that rounds out breakfast and keeps you energized until lunch, which is later in Spain than in other countries).

Pastries. Bocadillos. Café. Another lovely place to have breakfast or brunch in Ruzafa, although it has no terrace. Famous for its "Pincho de tortilla" or its cakes. They have a sister Restaurant in the Patacona Beach, which I definitely reccommend to try at least once during your stay in Valencia if you go to the beach area!

This bar belongs to the renowned local Chef Ricard Camarena. It's a small bar located inside the Central Market. Have a Valencian "almuerzo" or some tapas. Winecellar. I always say Casa Montaña is a must for every visitor and resident in Valencia. Local tapas restaurant full of character in the "Cabañal" neighbourhood (beach area). Dishes are simple but high-quality with the very best ingredients. Wine list is extremely good. Staff friendly and attentive. You have to book, as it gets very busy! If you don't go there for lunch or dinner, I at least recommend you to go there for a glass of red wine and a plate of Iberian ham... You will love it! :-)

Basque pintxos. Next to the City Hall Square. Very central location. I recommend it for having some "pinchos" standing, and not for having a proper lunch or dinner. This was the Silk Exchange, built between 1482 and 1533, and nowadays is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is made of three rooms almost empty and a beautiful small garden. You can spend your time in the small garden reading a newspaper or a book.
Enter the magnificent Post Office. Visit also the City Hall and its Balcony, the Crystal Room and the Historical Museum (free of charge and open Mon.-Fri., from 8:00-15:00). If you head just south of Plaza del Ayuntamiento, you can see the wonderful modernist train station “l’Estació del Nord” (Nord Railway Station), the Plaza de Toros (Bull Ring) and then head along Calle Colón for a little light shopping in Camper, Zara, Massimo Dutti, El Corte Inglés and other Spanish shops.

My actual neighborhood and currently the most fashionable district in Valencia. You will find art galleries, cool shops (like Gnomo) and bookstores (Bartleby, Ubik Café), lots of lively restaurants and bars with terraces and also clubs offering a more alternative atmosphere. Ruzafa is where most Valencians use to go out for dinner and to hang out. In the morning I would recommend dropping by the multi-coloured retro-chic Mercat de Russafa (“Ruzafa Market”), much smaller and less crowded than the Central Market; stop at “La Más Bonita” for breakfast, brunch or just for a coffee, or also at “Dulce de Leche”, an Argentinean pastry shop (try the strawberry and lemon tart). For a beer and tapas at midday, La Conservera (ancient fish shop where you can eat fish cans – sardines, anchovies, tuna, spicy eel…) is fantastic. If you haven’t tried the Agua de Valencia (cava with orange juice), ask for one at the terrace of Café 33. For dinner, my favourite place is Bar Vermúdez. They also serve a Vermouth aperitif on Saturdays and Sundays (between 11:00 and 13:00) with live music.

Parks & Nature

Enjoy the Turia Gardens (the old riverbed park) on a sunny day. It is the largest urban garden in Spain, with about 9 km long and 110 hectares. After a flood in 1957, the river Turia was diverted to the south of the city and Valencians turned it into a park. Its route is dotted by many places of interest: the Cabecera Park, the Bioparc (best zoological park in Europe), the Gulliver Park (children will love it), the Palau de la Música and the stunning City of Arts and Sciences... It has become the most popular place for sports as it has many sports facilities in its route (including a 5 km running track). The best way to enjoy it is by bike. You can rent a bike (I recommend Valencia Bikes, at Passeig de la Petxina 32 (open 09:30-18:00, reservation needed calling +34 963851740, located just a 10 min. walk from home) and cycle up to the “Parque de Cabecera” and down to the City of Arts and Sciences. There are a couple of kiosks with terraces to get refreshments on the way.

Have breakfast or brunch at “La Más Bonita” on the Playa de la Patacona, and then enjoy a day on the beach (Playa de Las Arenas). If lunch or dinner time approaches, visit one of my favourite wine and tapas restaurants in Valencia, Bodega Casa Montaña (is not cheap, but the place is worth a visit, at least for a glass of wine… or some Spanish ham), or have a Valencian paella or "arroz a banda" at Casa Chaparro Playa. As you will be in the area, you can also visit the former America’s Cup port (Marina Real) and spend the afternoon at the Marina Beach Club enjoying a cocktail and some chill-out music.
