Around the corner from the apartment, this bistro-coffee shop style restaurant offers good quality food and drinks for reasonable prices. Predominantly local Mediterranean & Italian cuisine. It's also a popular hangout place for Cairenes in Downtown. It opens bright and early, in case you are a morning person and has a nice breakfast selection. Also, every first Friday of the month, it offers locally produced (organic) products and a special menu dedicated to the Slow food movement.

Drinks & Nightlife

Carlton has a newly renovated rooftop bar. The views are lovely, the beer is properly chilled, and the service is very friendly and accommodating. Great place to hang out with friends or just go for a drink after a busy day discovering Cairo. The place opens at 6 pm, if you go early, you can enjoy some peace and tranquility.

If you are looking for an open-air (beer) bar with stunning views of Cairo this place is worth the trip! The furnishings remind of Cairo of the 1980s, so a rather unique ambience. ;) A place known by the locals mainly, so if you need to get some rest from your fellow tourists, this will work nicely.

Sightseeing

The Coptic Cairo area - also known as Old Cairo - is comprised of a medieval Coptic ghetto. The newly renovated museum is a great intro to the Coptic culture. This area is easily accessible by the metro: just get off at Mar Girgis stop and you're in front of the museum. Walking past Coptic Cairo you will come upon the Amr Ibn al As mosque - the first mosque to be built in Cairo after the Muslim conquest. And between these two points is located a small bazaar-style shopping center offering some great displays of local handicrafts. Highly recommended if you are into local - not made in China - souvenirs ;)

The highest density of Islamic monuments in the world, they say. ... You will find architectural treasures here spanning the last 1000-900 years. Lots of mosques and their minarets that offer wonderful views of the area. While here, visit the newly renovated Blue mosque & its minaret. Another great place to visit is the Gayer-Anderson museum near the Ibn Tulun mosque. A stroll, or lunch, at the nearby Azhar park is also highly recommended, especially if you want to get some rest from the busy streets. My favourite is a slightly delapidated yet very lively al-Merdani mosque :)

Parks & Nature

A hidden oasis of calm & peace at the edge of Dokki, close to Cairo university. The palm trees in this garden are stunning. I would recommend it in the mornings when it is rather empty of visitors.

Large stretches of greenery are rare and highly valued. Thanks to the Aga Khan foundation, Cairo now has a beautiful park next to Islamic Cairo. You will find a couple of restaurants here as well. Besides the greenery itself, the views of the neighbouring Islamic Cairo are simply stunning. I would avoid going on the wekends though, that's when the rest of Cairo is there as well, so it tends to get crowded ;)

A rather off the beaten track museum. Run by the government, it closes by 2 pm, so a morning visit is recommended. Besides agriculture, the museum pavilions offer a wide array of collections, even ethnographic and ancient Egyptian ones. A great example of a meta-museum: what happens to a museum collection when noone updates it for decades. ;) Highly recommended!
