Yasaka Shrine and Maruyama Park is a gorgeous area that, thanks to Shintoism, is open 24 hours. It's absolutely stunning to walk around -- if you go in the day expect to see lots of people in yukata and kimono. Wander around enough and you're sure to find some secret spots.
If you go at night, except in April when there are evening picnics and festive celebration, you will find yourself alone in a beautiful, historical layout of small shrines, winding gardens, and a backdrop of mountains you can proceed to hike up if you wish. A highly memorable and photographic location, a must-see for anyone visiting Kyoto.

This location is especially popular, and the truly adventurous might try their hand at hiking the trail at night! The Shinto shrine is open 24 hours, and in the evening is lit by a few lanterns. Though quite full in the day time, the path is completely empty at night -- great for a unique experience and photos.
