Food Scene

a place with inspiring food: re-thought Hungarian dishes, but not only: they have a fusion kitchen with many influences. Busy place, worth booking before arriving, however, if you do not find a place here, don't worry, around the place, there are plenty of great restaurants nearby.

really great restaurant with good Hungarian (and not just Hungarian) food, in an interesting old factory building that was an atelier before turning into this restaurant.

Sightseeing

one of my favourite "hidden treasure" in Budapest: if you are ready to walk-off the tourist paths, this place is a unique one, definately not very well known. It was built as the tomb of a medieval turkish military-spiritual leader, who was called (by his turkish soldiers) the "Father of Roses" (Gül Baba in Turkish) because of his rose plantations. The hill, where he lived and which counted as an isolated place in the medievals it the richest district of Buda, and many people, even locals do not know that the district (Rosehill) was named after Gül Baba. A place for silence, meditation, tranquility and magnificent views!

Parks & Nature

this is the starting point for walks in the Buda hills. This is the place in the Buda hills which can be reached the easiest by public transportation: the bus 90 and 21/21A starts from the Szell Kalman ter (final station of tram 4/6) and climbs up the Buda hills. Get off at Normafa and follow the people! There will be stunning views to Budapest, walking and running paths to the Buda forest, fireplaces, and a place (close to the bus stop yet) where you can taste the famous Hungarian strudel (rétes), a sweet cake filled with cherry, apple or cream filling. You can go back to the town with the LIBEGO: a hanging chair, a sort of skylift, which brings you down.

Shopping

This is the oldest and less turistic flea market in Budapest! You can find everything here, mostly second-hand things starting from children toys to vinyls, etc. Not so many antique stuff here (if you are looking for that, you should visit the Ecseri út Flea Market) and not so many handcraft products, mostly small things, household accessories, medals and many intersting catches from communist times. Mostly orginary people selling their things, not so many re-sellers. It only open on Saturdays and Sundays, from 8 am to 2 pm.

a fruit and vegetable (and meat) market very close to my flat! there are a lot of markets in Budapest, most of them built in the same period, same architectural style. The biggest is called Nagyvasarcsarnok (Central Market Hall), which is usually recommended for tourists. While it is undoubtfully beautyful and recommended, this small market hall on Hunyadi ter is anything but touristic, so take it as a hidden gem. Ordinary market with local sellers in a once nice, but very crapped down building by now. On the weekends there is also an open-air market.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is the little (and older) brother of the very famous Szimpla kert ruin pub, the place where the story of Szimpla and the ruin-pub-revolution started 20 years ago. A surprising place: there is an entrance for a small restaurant, a barber shop next to it, and the entrance of a really cool pub. The restaurant and the pub are connected downstairs, under the barber shop. The cellar is also interesing: you may feel a bit like Alice in the rabbit's hole... :)

Undoubtfuly one of the most unique bars in Budapest. This place, which is not too easy to reach (by public transportation) needs a bit of an excursion. But once you arrive you will feel like in Ibiza, except that you are sitting on the pebbly shore of the Danube river in sunchairs and you are drinking your cocktail. A really lounge feeling! The place can be reached by car, suburban train (+ a bit of walking), however, I would recommend you two more special ways to reach it: 1. why not to rent a bike and ride there by bike? It would be some 20-30 mins. bike ride from the city centre; 2. there are regular BOATs operated by the Public Transportation Company of Budapest (BKK), which can be used with a ticket of 700 HUF. One of the boatlines end up at Rómaifürdő, from where Fellini is a pleasant 8-10 mins. walk! Boatline timetable: http://bkk.hu/apps/menetrend/pdf/8120/20160901/a.pdf

Entertainment & Activities

A really authentic tea place in a nicely set up cellar. Great place if you want to get away from the outside world. Really nice atmosphere and great tea collection. Be aware that there is a table reservation service so there might not be free tables every time. Great place for a date!
