Restaurants

Picco was created to perfect pizza and icecream and these foods are embedded in the restaurant name. All of their ingredients are sourced from the highest quality vendors and prepared with the highest standards. Every dish has a unique and special quality. The menu has something for everyone with salads, tacos, housemade pastas, and pizzas. Their pizza is cooked in a gas oven, or what they call a “ceramic hearth” that gives the each pie a signature charred crust. The base of the pizza is thin and crispy, and the crust is heightened with a light and doughy consistency. You cannot go wrong here with any choice and the combinations change often. If you are feeling more adventurous, try picking your own ingredients and making a calzone. Their icecream can be ordered separately at the bar or at the table if you are dining in. Their daily flavors change but generally include the classics such as vanilla, dark chocolate, ad mint chip, as well as special combinations like peanutbutter swirl and raspberry brownie. This is a great option for a night in with delivery.

This is one of the more lively restaurants in Back Bay (or atleast on weekend nights) and is much more than just a wine bar. They have a huge food menu consisting of Spanish style tapas. I recommend Barcelona Wine Bar for a night with friends where you order a lot of tapas to share and drink some great Spanish wine. Order 3-4 tapas per person, and definitely get the bacon wrapped dates for something sweet and savory. 5 Blocks Away / 525 Tremont Street / 4.5 Stars on Yelp

B&G Oysters is one of a cluster of businesses owned by James Beard Award Winner and Boston native Barbara Lynch. Lynch is regarded as one of the world’s leading chefs and restaurateurs and she was featured in Time Magazine’s 2017 top 100 influential people of the year. This restaurant has a casual local neighborhood vibe and is her take on the modern oyster bar. The menu offerings include fresh oysters from both coasts, seasonal dishes, and inspired New England classics. The lobster roll is my favorite – the traditional dish is executed flawlessly. Large lobster chunks are tucked between a buttery toasted roll, accompanied by a side of pickles and coleslaw. Be sure to order a side of fries too – they are thin, crispy, totally irresistible, and pair wonderfully with the dish. In the summer the restaurant opens up their backyard with outdoor seating. A few feet away from the restaurant is Stir, Lynch’s demonstration kitchen and cookbook store. They offer special monthly events such as a dinner featuring Lynch’s cookbook recipes or a cooking class. B&G Oysters also offers Oyster shucking classes. 3 Blocks Away / 550 Tremont Street / 4 Stars on Yelp

Kava Neo-Taverna This is the best Greek food that I’ve had not only in Boston, but anywhere. The restaurant interior is light and bright with blue accents, and gives subtle Mediterranean vibes. The atmosphere is great for any occasion – whether it be dining at the bar solo or dinner with friends. The menu style is primarily sharable plats with a few entrée options. The restaurant advises that each person should have at least 3 dishes. A few of their standout dishes are their zucchini chips, grilled calamari, and feta psiti. The zucchini chips are thinly sliced and lightly fried, and they are served over tzatziki; a tangy yogurt based sauce. The chips are perfectly crisp and addictively good. The grilled calamari is seasoned in a refreshing lemon sauce and is one of the most popular dishes there for good reason. The feta psiti is a piece of feta cheese wrapped in phylo dough and topped with honey and sesame seeds. This dish is served warm and has the ideal balance of sweet and saltiness. The restaurant does not accept reservations and tends to fill up fast – I advise to go before 6:45pm in order to be seated immediately, otherwise be prepared to put your name down on their waitlist. 3 Blocks Away / 2112, 315 Shawmut Ave / 4.5 Stars on Yelp

Coppa The definition of the word Coppa is type of specialty Italian sausage. The restaurant name is true to the menu, which offers a modern seasonal take on meat-centric Italian style tapas, pizzas, and pastas. Start with a selection of salamis and cheeses, and then order a pasta for your entree. The portion sizes are on the smaller side so if you are with a group, I recommend sharing a few of their appetizers to start. Some of their dishes have a kick to them so make sure to inform your waiter if you do not like spice. Also, their Italian sandwich is one of the best I’ve had, and I highly recommend this for a shared appetizer or a lunch entrée. Coppa is a very popular restaurant so be sure to book a reservation in advance or walk-in and put your name down on their list early. 6 Blocks Away / 253 Shawmut Ave / 4 Stars on Yelp

Ooishi sushi is my go-to sushi in all of Boston. It’s a fancy spot where the fish is always fresh and the menu has enough options for all sushi cravings. Even though the restaurant is on the fancier side, you can also show up in gym clothing and no one will bat an eye. They offer traditional sashimi and nigiri options, as well as a variety of special maki rolls. For appetizers, be sure to get the spicy tuna over crispy rice. The dish comes with two large pieces and the combination of warm, crunchy rice with refreshing bites of tuna is very satisfying. My favorite sushi rolls are below. Make a reservation at least a day in advance. They also offer takeout and take the proper precautions so that the sushi travels well. Lunch can be a lower cost and excellent way to enjoy this delicious place. “The Maki”* / torched toro, spicy mayo, asparagus, cucumber, bonito flakes, ginger sauce & jalapeno $23 Crispy Mango* / tempura flakes, mango, cucumber, spicy mayo, tuna, sudachi & honey glaze $20 0.5 Milles Away / 1166 Washington Street / 4 Stars on Yelp

Fox & The Knife is acclaimed celebrity chef Karen Akunowicz’s homage to the year she spent working in Modena, Italy. Akunowicz won James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef of the Northeast in 2018 and you can taste why in the food at her first solo venture. Bostonians are flocking to the restaurant and it was already named one of Food and Wine Magazine’s best new restaurants of 2019. The restaurant has a feel of a lively neighborhood vibe paired with sophisticated décor and an open kitchen where you can watch the chef and sous-chef cook (the bar is a wonderful place to sit and watch it all happen). The menu embraces Italian food and culture beginning with appretivo light bites, followed by antipasti, primi, and secondi. The primi pasta dishes are also large enough to be mains. The dishes are thoughtfully prepared with each ingredient in harmony. You can’t go wrong with any option, but my favorites are below. Fox & The Knife is very popular and uses the reservation system Resy. I recommend downloading Resy and setting a notification for when reservations open up here in order to reserve a table or walk in and sit at the bar. Standout dishes: Focaccia Broccoli alla grilla “ceasar” Malfadini Pollo Al Mattone

SRV stands for Venetian-Style Bacaro and wine bar. If you’ve never been to Venice before, you are going to want to find and air b&b there after eating here. The menu consists of “citccehtti” which are small snacking bites, “Piatti” which are comparable to appetizers, and “Granni” which are their pasta entrees. For Ciccehetti, I recommend getting the Polpette, which are pork and beef meatballs, and Baccala Mantecato, salt cot atop black bread with garlic and herbs. If they have mussels in the “Piatti” section, get them! They served in a white, garlicy broth that you will want to sip with a spoon. No one will judge you. Toasted garlic bread is also served in the dish. The pasta dishes are seasonal and you can’t go wrong with any of them. The tasting menu is a personal favorite too, always varied and creative. A truly hidden gem in Back Bay. This quaint, unassuming French café serves wonderful pastries and coffee. The real draw here for me though, is their outstanding cinnamon bun. A crispy caramelized crust on the outside gives way to moist and tender dough within. Go early because they often sell out by 10:30am. You can also call and reserve them in advance. I’ve driven 45+ minutes to get these cinnamon buns, so you are in a privileged location. The shop is on the small side so this isn’t somewhere to get some work done. Stop by here and grab some pastries before meeting friends and become everyone’s favorite person. 11 Blocks Away / 37 Clarendone Street / 4 Stars on Yelp

The South End Buttery is a quintessential neighborhood spot for any meal of the day. They have two storefronts that are located directly next to each other to suite dining in or dining out experiences. The first storefront contains ample seating if you want to get some work done, and serves coffee, pastries, and fast-casual lunch options such as salads or sandwiches. The location next door is much smaller and contains a selection of to-go prepared foods – think roasted vegetables, mac and cheese, gourmet salads, as well as a wide assortment of desserts (hence the “Buttery” in their name).
