Ample servings of homemade delights in a convivial restaurant adorned with antique oddments. The mezedhes (appetisers) – zucchini balls, feta with honey, tzatziki etc – are particularly good.

Among Nafplio's most sophisticated restaurants, guests come here for the status – and visitors after Greek fare will need to head elsewhere. Its focus? High-end meats. Think the likes of Australian waygu, Dutch veal, American Black Angus steaks, New Zealand grass fed tenderloin. But with that, high end prices.

Kavalaris Corner.Just off Plateia Syntagmatos and nestled into a cosy corner, this delightful spot whips, tosses and fries up some of the best mezedhes (appetisers) around. You can watch the chef at work in the open kitchen, though our guess is you'll be too busy munching on everything from spetsofaï (sausage) to apaki (fried pork). Excellent veggie options, too. Traditional products but contemporary creations.

For a break from Greek cuisine, go Italian(ish). Scuola ('school' in Italian) teaches the locals, especially the younger crowd, a thing or two about good cuisine. Its quirky interior comprises a classroom setting, complete with a blackboard and books. Pasta and pizza with Greek twists break all the rules.

The only 'true' gelato shop in Nafplio is still holding back the competition. Italian gelati maestros Marcello, Claudia and Monica Raffo will tell you: ‘This is no fantasy – it's the real thing!’ Only natural and local ingredients are used and it's all made on the premises.

Palamidi fortress. This vast, spectacular citadel, reachable either by steep ascent on foot or a short drive, stands on a 216m-high outcrop of rock that gives all-encompassing views of Nafplio and the Argolic Gulf. It was built by the Venetians between 1711 and 1714, and is regarded as a masterpiece of military architecture in spite of being successfully stormed in one night by Greek troops in 1822, causing the Turkish garrison within to surrender without a fight.

Bourtzi island.Odyssey Cruises runs boat excursions to this island fortress. Built in 1473, it lies about 600m west of the town's port and has served variously as a pirate deterrent, a home for executioners and a hotel. Note that the battlements are identical in design to Moscow's Kremlin; both were built by 15th-century Venetians. Boats leave from the northeastern end of Akti Miaouli. You can buy tickets from where the boats depart.

Archaeological Museum.Inside a splendid Venetian building, this museum traces the social development of Argolis, from the hunter-gatherers of the Fracthi cave to the sophisticated Mycenaean-era civilisations, through beautifully presented archaeological finds from the surrounding area. Exhibits range from Paleolithic fire middens, dating from 32,000 BC, to elaborately painted amphorae (c 520 BC). You may also spot the only existing bronze armour from near Mycenae (3500 years old and complete with boar-tusk helmet), a wealth of funereal offerings and ceremonial clay masks.
