Food Scene

This lovely little Organic Cafe is around the corner from the house. It's the second 'Wild Cafe' in Brighton and is run by Riad who makes all the food himself. The service is very good, the coffee is great and the staff know about natural and organic foods. I can't resist the warmed chocolate twists! The Wild Cherry in Queens Park Road has a very extensive menu and worth visiting too..

Great vegetarian cafe in the North Laines. Gets busy lunchtimes but worth the wait. Choose a main dish, select 2 sides and have free lettuce and 2 sauces. I love this cafe and usually have the Roti.

'Small Batch' cafes offer great coffees and snacks. It's a company born in Brighton which has expanded very successfully. I like the vegan banana bread and an oat milk decaf latte..

Drinks & Nightlife

This lively and packed little bar offers wonderful local Sussex draft Craft Beers. It is run by a group of local teachers who take turns to run the bar. Its open later on the weekends but at 9pm weekdays so check their opening times. I love the 3 x thirds of pints, served on a wooden board. ( you can try 3 different beers this way ) The staff know their beers very well.

My favourite pub in Brighton. A large rambling rabbit warren of rooms that goes up and up to the smoking roof terrace. They cook good Sunday roast dinners and have a restaurant open all week. Football on TV's, great selection of ales and wines. It can get very crowded but there are nooks and crannies where you can sit quietly and chat.

The Komedia is a small funky multi media venue with cinema, live performance stage rooms and cafe. Really happening place offering a regular line of Top comedians, musicians, Impov comedy and more. The cinema is 'Duke's at Komedia' which is the 'sister' cinema to The Duke of Yorks. There are three screens, lovely snacks and drinks and usually very good films.

Sightseeing

Brighton's main architectural attraction. The kitchen room is my favourite with it's tall copper plan trees. Strangely decorates palace rooms, painting exhibits and furniture installations. Kind of creepy too. Nice cafe upstairs.

You have to 'do the pier' if you visit Brighton. It has it's noisy fun arcades and heaps of bad-for-you snacks booths, tacky shops and funfair at the end. Just walking along the walkways high above the sea is great. The views of the beaches are good and the air is a tonic. Nice Henna Tattoo booth if you fancy.

Rottingdean is a lovely historic village by the sea. It has a wealth of little cafes, shops and boutiques, a great village green area with duck pond, Rudyard Kipling's Garden, 'The Grange' library and museum and cafe, great pubs and my favourite French restaurant called Le Bistro Gourmand. The architecture is is very special. Some buildings from the 15th Century! All worth seeing and enjoying. The tea rooms are a blast. Huge scones with cream and Jam! The beach here has rock pools when the tide goes out. Kids can catch shrimps and winkles etc. Theres a cafe on the beach and wonderful under cliff walks from here. get there by car or bus from Brighton.

Parks & Nature

This Victorian park is on the site of an ancient spring and well. There's a small mature wood, tame squirrels everywhere, a kids play area with arial runway and wooden climbing gear. A good cafe. A 'blind persons' garden area. It's planted with nice smelling herbs and has a hand rail all around it. ( a bit run down now though ). There are Victorian photos of the park displayed around the pathways. It has rich history of live entertainment there and there are pics of 'hairy cave man' and 'gypsy in Caravan' entertainers mounted around the park. I like the hidden fish pond and woodland areas.

Stunning views from Devils Dyke which is at the top of the South Downs. Nice large pub there and easy walks west and east along the top. You can often see hang gliders there which is fun. Some great pubs down in the valley below to walk to, and climb back up from. There's free parking there and the bus 700 goes there and back from very near the house.

The Seven Sisters Cliff walk is quiet special and invigorating. Can be windy up on the cliff tops but lovely sea views. Be very careful not to get too near the edge. Seriously.. some fatal accidents have happened.

Arts & Culture

I love this museum as the permanent collections are quite eccentric. A room of endless ceramic figurines, an african display, a display of rocks and fossils, old english paintings, a room about the seafront, The changing exhibitions are always interesting, and not too big. The main hall Art Deco furniture collection is stunning. It's right beside the Pavillion and in the heart of town.

In the village of Rottingdean, along the coast road eastwards, there's a place called The Grange. It houses the Rottingdean library, has a nice little upstairs art Gallery/museum, with a Rudyard Kipling exhibition, and has a great garden cafe. A wonderful historic house with quirky things to discover. Rudyard Kipling, the Author of The Jungle Book lived in Rottingdean. I like this place very much for a sunny garden lunch. I also love the secret Rudyard Kipling Gardens in Rottingdean. Beautiful ! and kids can play hide and seek in it.

Shopping

This road has more charity shops in it than anywhere else in the universe ( as far as I know ). It's pedestrianised which is nice but the decor is nothing special. If you like charity shops try George Street in Hove!

It's the oldest working cinema in Great Britain. It's got great character. A bar upstairs and a sofa gallery you can watch films from. A big downstairs seating room with retro decor. They show more art films than anywhere else in Brighton.

Brighton Marina is not a favourite place of mine but it offers a lot for families including cinema, bowling, restaurants, cafes, boat trips, fishing and more. Theres a park house there of course and a nice under cliff walk eastwards towards Rottingdean.
