Things to do & see in the area.

Every year at the beginning of July there is a fabulous week long festival in Brioux not to be missed! Comprising a programme of music, Art, drama, performance, food & general conviviality, it is highly recommended. Throughout Summer, there are local festivals not be be missed. Melle has a wonderful Jazz festival as well as regular outdoor music and dining events. Local markets and flea markets are always entertaining, plus give great opportunities to buy wonderful produce.
Great Friday morning market, wonderful place to stock up on tomatoes, cheeses and great meats for the weekend. Stop by one of the street cafés nearby for a morning coffee and pastry or lunch!

Spend a day exploring this spectacular island . Have lunch at La Flotte, (we love to lunch at "Georges" right on the marina but pretty much everything is good!) then spend the afternoon strolling and shopping in St Martin de Ré.

Spectacular market on Friday mornings and the weekend. If driving, I recommend you park at the Ecran parking next to the Aquarium. The Aquarium is world class and highly recommended especially if you have children with you. Wander round this historic Port City, lunch at one of the many restaurants. Seafood at André's, or any of the varied restaurants and tavernas, then an afternoon at the magnificent aquarium or stroll the beautiful town for some great shopping, wonderful restaurants. You can even take a sunset dinner cruise to end the day!

Fabulous restaurant behind the Donjon in Niort. Park in the carpark behind the Donjon and walk over the river bridge for a delicious, well priced lunch. Get there early as it's very popular, in fact, make a booking if at all possible!

Small Thursday morning market. Fabulous boulangerie on the main street. Pizza food truck every Wednesday evening outside the Intermarché. Burger & chips food truck on a Monday evening parked in the carpark near the bridge over the Boutonne river exiting the village, Melle direction. À table - great dining venue - something for everyone.

City/town information

We love Niort! Saturday morning at the fabulous market at les Halles, then a lunch at one of the great restaurants overlooking the green park in the centre, or at Les Planches (our favourite!) on the river. Make sure you book as it's busy! There is plenty to see. The Donjon, the new renovated arts centre on the river, the cobblestone back lanes and shops. Spend the morning in Niort and head back to Juillé via the Marais Poitevin and make a day of it?

The journey to Cognac is 45 minutes of beauty. Winding roads through spectacular vineyards and ancient villages. We love to visit regularly. It can be busy when the Cognac Blues Festival is on, but this just makes the place even more interesting in our minds. Impromtu performances by some of the festival musicians make a visit very special. Lunch at Creperie L'Olympia, or for a more upmarket experience try La Courtine on the Charente river, L'Atelier du Quais or any number of great eateries! A cocktail at Luciole Bar before eating at one of the riverside restaurants? A tour around the one of the distilleries is also highly recommended. Hennessy have a tour that includes a (short) boat trip!
