Free Must-Do Activities in Seattle

Sightseeing

Although touristy, Pike Place Market is one of Seattle’s top sights and absolutely free – except for the money you’ll be tempted to spend here. Pike Place Market is one of the United States' oldest continually-operating public farmers' markets, originally opened to the public in 1907. With the range of vendors, from fishmongers and florists to food stands, demonstrates the Port of Seattle’s importance and why it became such a valuable jewel in the Pacific Northwest’s crown. This is a great place to shop and people-watch any day of the year.

Situated in the heart of the city, Seattle Center is a major cultural hub. It’s here that you’ll find most of Seattle’s top attractions, including the Space Needle, Museum of Popular Culture and Chihuly Garden and Glass, as well as many choice of theatres. This was the site of the 1962 World’s Fair and, although several of the attractions do have an entrance fee, you can explore the beautiful grounds for free.

Hundreds of miles of hiking trails wind through dense forest and past placid lakes and waterfalls. The scenic Wonderland Trail encircles the entire park, catering to long-range backpackers. There are plenty of short, spectacular day trips, as well, whether hiking in summer of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter.

On the north end of Lake Union, you'll find what may be the most unique park in the area. The 21-acre industrial area, formerly the site of a gas plant, was transformed in 1975 into a recreational complex (a worldwide first). You'll find that there's plenty to do in the park, including kayaking, sailing, picnicking and bicycling. Pick up treats to enjoy from nearby Fremont Brewery, Stone Way Cafe, Pablo y Pablo or Made in House.

West Seattle is an often overlooked part of Seattle that offers one of the few destination beaches on Puget Sound. Alki Beach has a two and a half mile long pedestrian walkway, and in the summer is populated by beach volleyball players, sun worshipers, and beachcombers. Most of the beaches on Puget Sound are covered in rock and shells, but on Alki Beach you can get sand between your toes, get some exercise, and take in a great view of the Seattle skyline.

Amazon's construction in the Denny Triangle– the Spheres feature a relatively low to the ground with a sci-fi movie aesthetic. Constructed in white metals and glass, the spheres house a veritable botanic garden's worth of plants.
