Really fresh and delicious sushi. Made to order and larger than most places. It's true the owner seems sometimes less than excited at first, but she grows on you - and eventually you enjoy seeing her - review on FB

Activities

Yorkeys Knob is the only kite surfing beach in Cairns that gets the right winds and combines it with shallow waters and a wide beach. It has no direct on shore winds. Its wide beach has no coconut or palm trees on it. It’s the only beach in the Cairns area that gets the trade winds suitable for kite surfing, from April to October. Chris from Kite Rite Australia has been doing kite surfing lessons and recreational kite surfing at Yorkeys Knob since 2000. He knows the beach, its best locations and the conditions. If you are planning a Cairns kite boarding holiday, or want to learn kite boarding in Cairns, then contact Kite Rite Australia today and we’ll book you in for lessons, equipment and the low down.

General Information

Hidden away behind a headland poking out into the Coral Sea, lies one of Tropical North Queensland’s best-kept secrets, Yorkey’s Knob. The laidback tropical atmosphere and feeling of ‘seclusion’ of Yorkey's Knob is irresistible for those looking to escape, relax and unwind. The magnificent sweeping deck of the local Yorkey's Knob Boat Club commands spectacular views of the yachts moored in Half Moon Bay and out to the headland of Trinity Beach. You'll find the Half Moon Bay Golf Club right by the boat club. Those looking to wet a line are well catered for with many good fishing spots around the bay, beach and mangroves. Keen anglers can also hire a boat and anchor off the bay for a day of fishing in the open sea. Yorkey’s Knob is just 15 minutes from the Cairns City Centre and Palm Cove, just under an hour to Port Douglas and only 10 minutes to the turn-off to Kuranda and the beautiful Atherton Tablelands Population: 2766 The Beach - The swimming area is at the northern end of Sims Esplanade. It is patrolled for six months of the year by Surf Lifesaving Queensland, and has a stinger net to protect swimmers from box jellyfish. There are barbecue and picnic facilities, plus public toilets and showers. The beach is lined with she-oak casuarinas, beach almonds, ballnuts and coconut palms. The beach is a popular for kitesurfing and windsurfing.[ The History - Yorkeys Knob is situated in the Djabugay (Tjapukai) traditional Aboriginal country. Yorkeys Knob got its name from George Lawson, a Yorkshire-born, Cairns-based beche-de-mer fisherman (From the nickname Yorkey, and the Hill being the "Knob".) On 10 June 1886, Yorkey Lawson reported the loss of a man and his wife from Green Island. They had left to visit the wreck of the Upolu, intending to return the same day. Lawson made a search for them, but was unable to find any trace of them, not even an accident.
