The Vischpoort was the only city gate in Harderwijk since 1673. The old town had two gates on the side of the former Zuiderzee and three other gates, but now there is only one gate that continues to a cozy square with many restaurants next to it, called 'Vischmarkt'. Next to this small area is what is left of an old wall that stretches in the distance along some of what used to be water.

In 1797 the tower collapsed and destroyed part of the nave, but during the restoration vault paintings by Ewolt van Delft were found under thick layers of varnish that had already been dated to the 16th century!
