Beautiful, fun, must see places

Huge roadside waterfall and swimming area, famous for its diving ledge. While caution is always recommended, it is a fun place with a lower river level on the other end, and a hiking trail above. Located in the Smoky Mountains National Park, right turn past the Sugarland’s Visitor Center. Be sure to watch for the second waterfall after you leave, on the left, as you continue through the park. Stop along the way before you get to the Sinks, at Metcalf Bottoms for a picnic, restroom break and plenty of easily accessible river in the picnic grounds to play in or float in.

As you drive through the park on your way to Cades Cove, after the Sinks, and other beautiful pull offs you pass along the way, you come to the Townsend Wye, at the intersection which turns toward Townsend, or continues straight on into Cades Cove. This is a very popular swimming hole, with a beach of sorts and a large grassy area. The river beyond is very popular for tubing, as it is usually just the right depth, and quite wide in places. There are places in town down the road from the turn off, to buy or rent tubes, as well as shops selling hiking and sporting gear, restaurants, coffee shops, gift shops. If you head this way, Apple Valley Farms is a must see stop along the way, sort of a restaurant/fudge/candy/coffee/gift/country store all rolled into one location. Dancing Bear restaurant is another unique 5 star dining experience on the hill above there, if you get the chance. Past this are many Antique and gift shops to experience before you turn around and head back to the park. Trailhead Steak and Trout is an awesomely good restaurant you will pass along the way, and Wears Valley is another unique experience on the left as you head back, if you choose to make the turn and take the drive. Just a short distance to more unique shops, attractions and general stores.

Cades Cove is a peaceful, beautiful place everyone should experience. A place to see history and beauty, in old preserved cabins, barns, churches, and other structures from the past, and a way of life that was long ago. A place to see wildlife, stop and walk in a pasture, along one of the many trails, explore old structures, play in the creeks, go horseback riding, ride a bike, and so much more. The picnic area is an awesome beautiful place for a picnic or cookout, right by the river. The campground store is also an awesome experience, and they sell food to go, as well as drinks, snacks, souvenirs and gifts. These are both right before the entrance to the loop. The Primitive Baptist church, Abrams Falls trailhead, and the visitor center, and gift shop, located midway of the loop, are three things located off the main rd that you should take the quick turn down the rd to see.

Beautiful, scenic, refreshing, the boulders in the river are fun for kids and adults to play on, or just sit, relax, enjoy the view. The relaxing sound of the water can be heard throughout the entire area, with many picnic sites with grills located by or near the river. Great place to set up your chairs, hammocks, and spend the day. Many spots with easy access to the water.

The best place to see elk from mid September to late October, during the elk rut, this place is usually full of elk. The historic buildings, working farm and exhibits are a lesson in the history of the area, amid the beautiful backdrop of the mountains and rivers. There are many interesting and beautiful historical sights and short hikes along the way. Continue this drive to see Cherokee, Nc, and historical, beautiful Bryson City NC, both of which I highly recommend.

Located above and behind Gatlinburg, from traffic light #8 on Historic Nature Trail Rd, where you can see historic cabins, old mills, and other structures on old home places, still standing amid beautiful forests, rushing streams and waterfalls. Many hiking trails and pull offs along the way. Watch carefully as you drive in the trees and all around you for glimpses of wildlife, especially bears.
