ITINERARIO MONUMENTALE E CASTELLI [34] - PALAZZO REALE E PIAZZA DEL PLEBISCITO The Royal Theatre is connected with the majestic Royal Palace, the brightest jewel of the Bourbon kings. The palace was built in the early seventeenth century (under the direction of the architect Domenico Fontana) in honor of Philip III of Habsburg, who was planning a visit to the city (which never took place). The palace became, over time, the official residence of the kings of Naples. The structure is now an important museum, and the Royal Apartments and the lush gardens are particularly worth a visit.
ITINERARIO MONUMENTALE E CASTELLI [35] - BASILICA DI SAN FRANCESCO DI PAOLA The square where once the troops of the Kingdom of Naples used to stand, is crowned by the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola. It was built on the structure of the Pantheon in Rome, at the behest of King Ferdinand I, as a votive offering to San Francesco di Paola, who had interceded for him to return to the throne of Naples after the interlude of Murat.

ITINERARIO MONUMENTALE E CASTELLI [36] - CASTEL SANT'ELMO The sea is one step from Piazza Plebiscito and you can almost touch it from the little village of Santa Lucia. The view, here, is simply fabulous. Glancing up at the top of the hill, the Sant'Elmo Castle stands in all its grandeur. It is an ancient medieval fortress commissioned by the Anjou family on the ruins of a Norman tower, which was erected on an antique church dedicated to Sant'Erasmo.
