Greyfriars is located on the sunny south facing chalk slopes of the Hog’s Back at Puttenham, just outside Guildford in Surrey. The original vineyard was planted in 1989 and since taking over in 2010 we have expanded the area under vine to almost 50 acres on three sites focusing on producing stunning English Sparkling Wine. The vineyards are predominantly planted with the three classic Champagne varieties; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. However, also small plots of Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. They produce a range of spectacular English Sparkling Wines reflecting the unique local soil conditions, climate and heritage of the Surrey North Downs.

Built in the reign of Elizabeth I, Loseley Park stands in ancient Surrey Parkland close to the North Downs yet within reach of London. Still the home of the More-Molyneux family, it is remarkably unchanged since 1562 when Sir William More laid the first stones, and remains, as he intended, a place of calm, grace and subtle beauty. From the house itself, where the intricate panelling in the Great Hall was once in Henry VIII’s Nonsuch Palace; to the Tithe Barn with its ancient oak beams; to the elegant and restful walled garden, Loseley Park is sought after for civil weddings, corporate events, and as a location for films such as Sense and Sensibility. But it’s also a place to visit, to enjoy the grounds, the garden and house, and relax in one of England’s friendliest historic homes. ‘Invidiae claudor, pateo sed semper amico’ Shut to envy, but always open to a friend.

You wouldn’t be alone in wondering how a distillery nestled deep in the woodlands of the Surrey Hills came into existence. It’s a story of two Surrey locals coming together to create a distillery where things are done properly. In 2014, founders Ian McCulloch and James Shelbourne met in their local pub (where else?) and discussed the idea of setting up small, local distillery. Taking their inspiration from Scottish whisky distilleries, the two friends started out with a grand vision of making a truly sustainable distillery next to a fresh water source, producing handcrafted, artisan spirits using locally sourced ingredients. But first they needed the perfect location. Most distilleries end up in grim locations or boring industrial estates. Where’s the fun in that? Ian and James wanted somewhere filled with history, a good story and plenty of provenance. After scouting many locations in the south of England, one day Ian happened upon Sherbourne Farm (a former cow barn and petting zoo) on the banks of the magical Silent Pool in the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Excited by the find, Ian and James contacted the landowner, The Duke of Northumberland, and got the go ahead to restore the dilapidated farm buildings into the Silent Pool Distillery.

A very early example of an English landscape garden Painshill Park is one of the last great 18th-century landscape parks in England, designed by the Hon. Charles Hamilton, who was inspired by his 'Grand Tour' of Europe to create a picturesque pleasure park providing visitors with 'living pictures', including a cascade, a waterwheel, a Temple of Bacchus, a Gothic tower, a triumphal Roman arch, and a ruined abbey, among other fanciful follies.
