Sunday markets and dozens of shops makes this the antique capital of southern Europe. Not a lot of bargains to be found, but hours can be spent here wandering around, followed by lunch in one of the many restaurants that line the stunning canal or are to be found in the old town.

Too much to mention here, but a day in the Luberon Valley should be fitted in if you can. There are so many pretty towns, but some of our favourites are Gordes (breathtakingly beautiful), Fontaine de Vaucluse and Menerbes, or a bit further to Saignan and Lourmarin. Best to Google it and choose for yourself. A visit to the Senanque Abbey during or even outside of lavender season, is something you won't forget.

There are so many pretty towns, but some of our favourites are Gordes (breathtakingly beautiful), Fontaine de Vaucluse and Menerbes, or a bit further to Saignan and Lourmarin. Best to Google it and choose for yourself. A visit to the Senanque Abbey during or even outside of lavender season, is something you won't forget.
One of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France", a visit to Les Baux offers charming streets, ancient buildings and pretty views around every corner. Can be tied in with a visit to the Carrieres de Lumieres nearby.

Hard to describe, but a must see! Runs most of the year but check their website. It is a light and music show with the images projected onto the interior walls of a former quarry. Each year a different group of artists is featured and the soundtrack can range from opera to punk.

Arles has enough museums, galleries and historic sights to satisfy anybody. Add one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres anywhere and strong links to Van Gogh, not to mention great restaurants and Frank Gehry's latest building, and you could easily spend a day here.

A walk through the grounds of this chateau will take you past not only beautiful vines, but a couple of dozen works by some of the world's best know sculptors. As well as the sculptures, on the grounds are buildings designed by Renzo Piano, Tadao Ando and Frank Gehry.

For a little town just five minutes from Mas Verdun, Maillane sure punches above its weight. With LÓustalet and now this one, you are spoilt for choice. For most of the year you can sit outside under an umbrella, and in winter the interior is classic French bistro. We love the fact that the menu is a little different from elsewhere, they do some nice local wines, and desserts are delicious. Run by a small crew, service can be slow, but we reckon it's worth a try. With a bottle of wine you will be well fed for around 40 euros per head.

Closed from about Novenmber to March, so be sure to ring to check and then booking is recommended.

Friday markets in Eygalieres are less crowded than their Saint Remy equivalent on a Wednesday. The range may not be quite as wide, but you'd be hard pressed to come away disappointed. The town alone is worth a visit, even if the markets aren't on. A walk to the top of the town, just along the main street provides stunning views of the Alpilles.

Friday markets in Eygalieres are less crowded than their Saint Remy equivalent on a Wednesday. The range may not be quite as wide, but you'd be hard pressed to come away disappointed. The town alone is worth a visit, even if the markets aren't on. A walk to the top of the town, just along the main street provides stunning views of the Alpilles.
