Big table corals, coral bommies and on the steep slope sponges and whip corals. This is a good site to discover different invertebrates in the sheltered bay area and if the swell is not too strong, you can spend time between 10-20 meters and look for the macro creatures which inhabit the bay. Another site where the mola mola can be sighted.

Big coral bommies and large table corals line the bay. Going towards the slope you will pass over healthy patches of stag horn coral and huge table corals. Check under the rocky overhangs for shrimps and nudibranchs. In the right season this probably the best site to see mola molas. Also seen are frogfish, leaf scorpionfish, sand garden eels and cuttlefish. Crystal Bay is a good training site, with a nice beach area.

Occasional sightings of bamboo, wobbygong and nurse sharks. Turtles can also be spotted feeding on the soft corals.

Boat Transfer Schedule

It takes about 30 minutes to get to Nusa Penida from Sanur and only 15 minutes from Kusamba, which is located near Padang Bai. Some fast boat companies serve the port of Banjar Nyuh, which is close to Toyapakeh, and others serve the port of Sampalan. Both ports are located in the North of Nusa Penida. The safety on board is well maintained. I’ve never heard of any major incidents. Life jackets are available on board of all boats. Swim with Manta Rays

For many scuba divers this is a wet dream, but here on the island you don’t even need to gear up to get up close and personal with these gentle giants. There are many snorkel trips that can be booked around the island. Sights of manta rays are common and there is even a place called Manta Point, but don’t forget that this is their wild habitat. Spotting manta rays is not guaranteed! I was lucky enough to even spot them from the cliffs at the Blue Stairs, zoom in on the next photo and you can spot 34 manta rays.

Spot the Mola Mola

I have been diving with whale sharks, saw manta rays, dolphins, bull sharks and even whales but another creature of the depth that I would really love to see is a Mola Mola. Here in Nusa Penida they arise from the deep blue in the months July, August and September. Fingers crossed and don’t panic when you see this huge monster! ;) Check out this video compilation of amazing thigs to do and see in Nusa Penida with me in a prominent role. I traveled through the island with my Dutch friend Joey who made this awesome video. For sure you will recognize me! ;)
