What a special place. Food is consistently lovely and service even better. Lizette is around all the time. Waiters are stylish, on point and very good. The fusion of far eastern and African food makes it hard to decide what to eat. They have a wonderful shady out door area on hot days and a toasting wood burning stove on cooler evening. The atmosphere is always buzzing with contented guests. 20 on 8th Street, Hermanus

Things to do

Hermanus offers beach lovers several sandy options for a perfect beach day thanks to the usually mild Mediterranean climate and coastal location of the town. From the expansive Blue Flag Grotto Beach to the quieter secluded beaches tucked away amongst the cliffs and dunes; every beach offers its own experience. Below is a list of the main beaches in the area, but there are also plenty of places along the coat to explore. Breakfast Bay This little beach is situated between Onrus River and Fisherhaven and is ideal for a relaxed picnic or snorkeling adventures. Thanks to its location between magnificent sand dunes the wind is usually not an issue, even on the windiest of days, offering visitors a protected cove with plenty of space to play, relax and explore. Onrus Beach Situated at the edge of Onrus River, the Onrus Beach offers everyone a beautiful location to swim and enjoy the sunshine. The Onrus River Lagoon mouth also gives children the perfect location for a safer swimming experience whilst the expanse of sandy beach means that there is plenty of space for everyone and their sandcastle creations. In-season the beach becomes the go-to spot for surfing, especially during the annual Onrus Classic Surfing and Body Boarding Competition in December. Sandbaai Main Beach The Sandbaai Beach offers plenty of space for beach lovers, surrounded by rocky outcrops and countless tidal pools to explore. The shallower pools are perfect for a quick cool down, with perfect snorkel-friendly pools during high tide. In season there are life guards located along the beach, who are more than happy to guide visitors to the best spots along the beach. Langbaai This isolated beach is favoured by locals for its good surfing and body boarding waves. As its name suggests, this long beach is narrow and there are quite a few steps to traverse to get to the sandy shore, making it a difficult trip for the elderly or small children. However, for those willing to make the trip, the secluded experience is one of relaxation and quiet – perfect for a quick rejuvenation. Kammabaai Located next to Langbaai, Kammabaai beach is larger and easily accessible; a popular location for families and surfers alike. During low tide the beach offers plenty of places to picnic upon, with rocky outcrops teeming with sea creatures whilst high tide brings stronger currents and good waves for surfing. It’s suggested that children not swim during high tide due to the currents. The beach is also linked to the larger Voelklip and Grotto beaches via the Cliff Path and also offers ideal braai (barbecue) locations under shady Milkwood trees and plenty of rocks to climb. Voelklip Beach Another surfer favourite – this beach is also ideal for non-sand lovers as it offers leveled grassy lawns to picnic along, as well as a small sandy shore. The beach itself is quite small but offers enough space for enjoyable swimming and sunbathing. Due to its popularity there is usually a lifeguard on duty and plenty of parking close by. Grotto Beach The largest beach in the area stretches along the coast for over 18km (around 11 miles), bordered by mountains and indigenous plant life on one side and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean on the other. The Blue Flag Beach at Grotto only makes up a small expanse of this but is still the most popular location for beach-goers. There’s plenty of space for any sized crowd and the parking winds along the road for easy access along several designated pathways. Due to its status the beach has always got a lifeguard on duty at both the Grotto Beach and Kleinrivier Lagoon Mouth. At the lagoon families can enjoy a braai whilst overlooking the strand, or swim in the calmer lagoon waters and explore its shores. PLEASE NOTE: the ocean currents can be extremely strong at times and it’s advised that caution be taken when swimming in unknown waters.

Of course when in the neighbourhood of Hermanus even when there are no whales in the bay there is always the premier 27 holes golf course. The clubhouse and staff are nice. The practice facilities are nice and advise to use them. The maintenance is also good, even in times of lack of rain, they make sure you can enjoy your round. There are nice views of the Valley of the Heldelberg mountains. In quiet times you can join the competition on a Saturday and a Wednesday. There are also deer and springbuck around to watch you while playing.

The Old Harbour was proclaimed 'a Museum' in 1972. The first Curator Mr Guy Clark was appointed in 1973. The area that had been neglected for years was cleaned up and the cement work repaired. Old fishing boats were collected and repaired for outdoor display. An indoor Museum was planned and eventually built along the slopes where many old fishing shacks stood in early days.

THE WINE ROUTE On the way towards Hermanus along the R44, a quick left turn onto the R320 at the Wine Village will find you travelling along the stunningly picturesque Hemel en Aarde Valley, which is a beautiful route and is a perfect way to experience a different side of the Overberg. This road is also an alternative route to Caledon, linking Hermanus and the surrounding areas to this town. Once a gravel road, it is now tarred, making the 35 km trip to Caledon a winding and enjoyable route that passes by several different wine and entertainment facilities. The Wine Route, along the R320, boasts more than just its vast array of wine farms. It is also famous for its uninterrupted views of the valley from any one of the superb restaurants, deli’s or stalls, all of which give you the choice of world class wines and meals. You can also enjoy a more thrilling experience by taking a tour of the valley via horseback at Cloud's End, or you can choose to enjoy an adrenaline pumped afternoon of paint ball wars, quad bike or zip-line tours at Hermanus Forest Adventures. There are also hiking and mountain biking trails on offer from other adventure businesses. The Valley is therefore an escape from the norm of city life and should be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. The experience will leave you feeling refreshed and content. It was once said that “so high are the hills, which closely embrace the valley all around, that they seem to touch the sky and you cannot see anything but Heaven and Earth”.

The Hermanus MTB Trail network, in the Hemel & Aarde Valley, has 4 options for the beginner to serious MTB rider. Starting and finishing at the Hemel & Aarde Village, the Green, Blue, Red and Black Route offers something for each rider. With trails ranging from fast forest single track to sections of tarmac, the trail will take you past vineyards and orchards, through spectacular fynbos and give you amazing views of the valley and our town. When in 2002 Jean-Claude (JC) and Carolyn Martin took up the challenge of establishing a winery in a remote corner of the Walker Bay Wine Region, they did so with the courage of their conviction. The 40 hectares of undulating land on the lofty Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge had never been planted to vines before, but recognising the vast potential, they set out with tenacity and determination to transform it into a model wine farm. No easy feat, but then the Swiss-born JC and South African-born Carolyn (née Finlayson) both come from wine pioneering stock spanning at least three generations and two continents!
