Just 15 minutes south is Mossman. A picturesque little township nestled at the foot of the mountains among bright green fields of sugar cane. As the sugar cane capital of Far North Queensland, the sugar cane crushing season (June to October) sees up to 800,000 tonnes of sugar cane and produce up to 105,000 tonnes of raw sugar. The quaint cane trains rattle back and forth through the town hauling in the harvest. Out in the fields you might chance upon the breathtaking sight of a cane fire in full force.

The laidback tropical town of Port Douglas, is just 30 minutes south and is the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. It’s also a popular resort destination in its own right, with the tree-fringed sands of Four Mile Beach stretching down the bay and a leafy, compact town centre lined with hip cafés and bars. Super yachts from around the world berth at Port Douglas’s sheltered marina, where tour boats depart for sightseeing cruises to nearby coral cays and expeditions to spectacular diving spots on the outer reefs.

Just 15 minutes north is the funky little Daintree Village that was originally a settlement created in the 1870's by timber-cutters and is now an unspoilt oasis in the midst of some of the loveliest and most varied scenery in the far north of Queensland. Today low-impact tourism and sustainable cattle- and tropical fruit-farming in the beautiful valleys beyond the Village form the lifeblood of this laid-back little township with all its charm of yesteryear.
