The Windy City is just a 40 minute train ride away on the South Shore Train line. Board the train just down the street at the Gary/ Chicago Airport stop (this is a 'flag stop', you must hit a button to signal the train to stop or it may just fly right past you). Then kick up your feet and enjoy the ride into downtown Chicago.

This beach got a recent facelift with newer concrete walk ways, a large playground, and a very cute concession stand.
Street parking is limited, lot parking is sometimes at a fee, so just be prepared for that. It's usually not more than $10 or so.

This is a really cute, bustling area of Gary, particularly in the summer time. Some of my faves are Vibrations juice bar, Dialouge Wine Bar, 18th Street Brewery, and Miller Pizza.

Just adore this place. Don't expect sophisticated and complex wines or an amazing array.
DO expect a really fun, easy going, adult crowd (read, not for the ratchet youth).

This place is my go to for all things zen. Great sandwiches, fresh pressed juices, stones, sage, and I think they have yoga classes, too.

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, but be careful for sporatic closings. I happen to really dig the Turkey Tips and the fish dinners on Fridays.
Quick tip: there is really no where to dine in, you're going to have to bring this back to the house or just order delivery. And don't forget dessert.

West Beach one the beaches that are further from The Chill Gary Getaway, but, for nature lovers, exploring the Dunes is worth it. One of the region's best bath houses here, too.

Not actually ON Lake Michigan, Wolf Lake has a ton of events like outdoor concerts and festivals when weather permits. Also, bike paths, a splash pad, and water rentals like kayaks and wave runners.
