There is in the small islands a unique charm, difficult to explain. It is perhaps the sea that surrounds them, or the nature that appears wilder, the feeling of adventure that you feel from the moment you embark to reach it or the evocative atmosphere. In Croatia, 29.7 kilometers from the mainland, there is the Silba island, also known as the pedestrian island. Since we discovered it, we think of nothing else but our next vacation, in this place so magical. Ready to descender it with us? Silba, which is part of the Zadar archipelago, is truly a unique destination. Here there are no cars or motorcycles, but only the postman’s scooter and tractors that can be used for a few hours a day to transport goods and basic necessities. Dominated by silence and peace, the island offers the opportunity to experience moments of absolute relaxation, between mornings spent in the beaches, walks in the woods and talks with the locals The island of Silba is definitely the perfect destination for those who dream of a summer of tranquility, for those who love the sea and nature. Looking at it from above it looks like an eight and the only village is located on the narrowest part; around there are beautiful bays with a pebble or sandy beaches and thick forests waiting to be discovered. During the year the inhabitants are little more than 200, but in summer the tourists who arrive are more than 1000, maybe they choose this place to escape from life and frenzy, getting to Silba is indeed like entering a new dimension, far from the reality known by those who live in the city. The sea is crystal cleat and it is easy to glimpse groups of playful dolphins, there are bars and restaurants offering typical Dalmatian specialties and fresh fish dishes, the atmosphere is suggestive, almost bohemian thanks to the many musicians and artists who have inhabited it and they still live in it. Silba’s unmistakable symbol is surely the tower that rises a few steps from the post office. it is 15 meters high and has an external spiral staircase that allows you to get to the top. It is said that it was built by a local captain, Petar Marinić, as a testimony of unhappy love. On foot or by boat it is easy to find deserted beaches or you can always choose the most famous one, Šotorišce, located right in front of the village Where to sleep on the island of Silba A Silba you will not find hotels, but only the hospitality of the locals, who rent rooms and houses. Among the various offers, there is also a Bed&Breakfast attentive to the environment. Otium offers breakfast with smoothies and local products, a garden perfect also for those who want to engage in yoga and comfortable rooms and apartments. Pets are allowed. An authentic island. Where there are no roads or noises. Where nature is still pristine and the pace of life slow. Our suitcases are ready, yours?

This kayaking trip is an expedition down the magnificent Wild West-like canyons of the Zrmanja and Krupa Rivers in Velebit Nature Park. Perfectly clear and green waters, rapids and waterfalls, hidden swimming pools and steep sided canyons will steal your heart and make this excursion an unforgettable experience. No previous canoeing or kayaking experience is needed if you can swim. Even children from 6 years old accompanied by parents can participate. During kayaking season (usually June-September) we use open inflatable sit-on-top kayaks for 2 persons. The trip starts in the little village of Kastel Zegarski in our base by the Zrmanja River. After providing you with the equipment, we will start our expedition downstream. Time and weather permitting, we will stop at the point where the Zrmanja and Krupa meet. This is a magical place for a swim and a picnic. The trip ends by the bridge in Muskovci. Here you can change and we’ll drive you back to the start point where you left your cars.

Only a short 25-minute boat journey across the Zadar Channel, Ugljan is a green, mountainous island carpeted with olive groves and dotted with small fishing ports. It's a beguiling island that has become a popular weekend getaway for Zadar residents who come for the beaches, bike paths and hiking trails. Ugljan runs northwest to southeast for 24km and is only 4km at its widest point. The gentle eastern side facing Zadar is more populous while the uninhabited western side is rugged and steep. Throughout the island, residents work at fishing, cultivating olives and grapes and tending to visitors. Named after the Croatian word for olive (ulje), Ugljan makes a great rustic escape from busy Zadar or an alternative place to stay. The indented coastline of Ugljan curves around a multitude of swimming coves of all types. The coastal path from Preko to Kali is easily accessible by foot or bike and passes a number of swimming spots. Just outside Preko on the way to Kali is the well-developed but concrete Jaz Beach with WC, showers, snacks, lifeguards and wheelchair accessibility. Zelena Punta outside Kukljica is shaded by pines and slopes gradually into crystal-clear water. Also nearby is pretty Kostanj beach. For more seclusion, take a 15-minute walk to Sabusa and Jelenica beaches on the other side of the island. It's easy to rent a bike from Preko and bike along a coastal path that runs from Preko to Kukljica. Bike paths also run from Ugljan to the western side of the island. The tourist offices have maps with hiking trails to the western side.

In recent years, Pag has become an increasingly popular island to visit in no small part because the resort of Novalja – to the north of the island – is considered one of Croatia’s premier party destinations. With a reasonable amount of open-air clubs which are also the venue of several summer music festivals, Novalja is the perfect place for those who want to party away their holiday. Of course, if that’s not the kind of holiday you want at all, don’t be put off coming to Pag. There’s plenty more on the island besides clubbing the night away. Pag Town, roughly in the centre of the island, is also a popular resort. The island is also very famous for its lace-making, and the local cheese – paski sir (meaning, Pag cheese) – that is made from sheep’s milk. If you visit, you definitely have to sample both of these.Pag Town is also famous for its carnival, with both a ‘winter’ and summer version, the latter taking place in July. The Pasko kolo is a traditional folk dance that is often performed during the carnival. Pag is also very easy to reach from the mainland, possibly the easiest out of all the Croatian islands. This is largely because the island is, in fact, connected to the mainland (at its southern tip) by bridge.

The river Krupa, one of the most beautiful rivers The river Zrmanja and its tributary the river Krupa, is one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. The river is a short watercourse of 17 kilometers with 19 waterfalls and it flows through a rather unknown, not touristic part of the Velibit area. The most beautiful part of the river is “Kudin Most” or Kuda’s bridge, a protected monument from the 18th century. The legend tells that the bridge was built by Kude, a young man who was in love but who was separated from his love by the river Krupa. The educational walk starts with a breathtaking view on the river and brings you to Kudin Most after a 40 minutes walk.

Lake and sea in closest vicinity – that is how we might describe Vransko Lake – the largest natural lake in Croatia. Immersed in the Mediterranean climate, but by no means deep – for the lake is two to five meters deep at the most – Vransko Lake is a natural phenomenon of a submerged karst field full of life. Due to the conservation of a substantial area of reed surfaces and endangered wetland habitats, the lake is an ornithological paradise. It is included in the list of Important Bird Areas in Europe, and the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. Bird lovers will undoubtedly cherish their visit an unforgettable experience. From hiding places, one can observe the life of birds, their nesting and care for the nestlings. Vransko Lake is a treasure of ornithofauna, with more than 260 bird species recorded so far, over one hundred of them nesting in the territory of the Nature Park. Brackish water provides habitat to a unique combination of marine and freshwater species, which makes the area highly attractive for fishermen. Vransko Lake is connected with the sea by a man-made channel of Prosika, which was dug out back in 1770, and connects the lake with the bay of Pirovac. The panorama trail around the lake is forty kilometers long. Visitors who decide to enjoy a walk frequently stop at the little port of Prosika, and then proceed to the sightseeing point of Kamenjak, which awards visitors with a rare opportunity – a spectacular panorama of both the lake and the Dalmatian islands. The specific position of Vransko Lake right by the sea is the source of all its attractions and its abundant biodiversity. Mediterranean marshlands, Ravni kotari countryside together with the sea and islands make Vransko lake an ideal destination even for the most demanding visitors.

Extending along the 73km Krka River, park runs from the Adriatic near Šibenik inland to the mountains of the Croatian interior. It’s a magical place of waterfalls and gorges, with the river gushing through a karstic canyon 200m deep. Sights built by humans are also a major draw of the region, the area’s remoteness attracting monks who constructed their monasteries here.

Food Scene

Located in a pleasant tree-shaded garden on Put Dikla, the road that leads from central Zadar to the Borik resort area, this popular pizzeria is perfectly placed for a quick and economical post-beach feed. Mamma Mia’s pizza toppings are a bit more generous than the thin smears of tomato you get in some other Italian-influenced establishments around town. Best food in the city in my opinion.

1. Church of St. Donatus Built on top of the old Roman Forum, this Byzantine church incorporates many of the ruins' structural elements. The floor has even been removed so visitors can look down into it! 2. Ošljak If you came to Zadar to relax, board a boat south to the island of Ošljak. No crowds, no cars, just rustic fishing villages, cypress-lined hills, and the best seafood restaurants! 3. Sea Organ This beloved art installation is essentially an instrument played by the waves. At night, the nearby Greeting to the Sun provides a fittingly impressive visual accompaniment.

Bolt and Uber are the best choice app for going from place to place in the city because they are cheap and practical. There are city busses too. Zadar is great city for cycling and there are many places where you can rent a bike for a day or couple of days.
