839 Main St. All small-batch homemade desserts. Great authentic biscotti, but I get special requests for Joey’s showcase dessert items. I can’t visit our friends in Sarasota without bringing a couple of Stoner’s Delight bars.

737 Main St. – Terrific craft cocktails and very good food with a large outdoor seating area. (The cocktails are inspired, but I have 3 words for you. Chicken and waffles.) They also have a screening room – a small theatre where they show old movies. You can order food and drinks, and the wait staff will serve you in the theatre. Gigglewaters is a great date night.

327 Main St. A unique wine experience with 40 self-pour wines by the sip, gulp, or glass to sample. You can also order a Build-Your-Own Charcuterie. We stroll down there often in the afternoon for a glass of wine, some cheese, and people watching.

100 Main St. (Corner of Main St. and Bayshore Blvd.) – Always packed; great patio dining. Terrific eclectic menu, but get the lobster bisque since it’s just a velvety dream. If you love fish, they know how to prepare it here.

997 Main St. – Huge outdoor seating area. On the one hand, it seems ridiculous to tell you that Nona’s is a “must stop” on your visit to our charming little town. On the other hand, this is serious pizza by a serious pizza maker (aka Head Pizzaioli). I’m an ex-New Yorker, and you know how we can be about pizza. Nona’s makes phenomenal pizza -whether it’s NY thin crust, Detroit-style, or Old World-style. (Honestly, I don’t even know what that last one is since I stay pretty preoccupied with the other two.) The owner of Nona’s is Jamie Culliton. He’s on the U.S. Pizza team and has won a couple of gold medals in Italy for dough-throwing. (Not joking – catch Jamie’s dough-throwing performance on YouTube). Go with a group of friends, and ask Jamie to come out and put on a “dough show.” You will ask yourself how you got this lucky. They often have live music too. This place gets BUSY! Go (or order for pick up) early! NOTE - Gluten Free pizza options are available!

143 7th Ave. N. (corner of 7th and Main). Maybe the best breakfast anywhere. You really can’t go wrong, but the Honey Bourbon Florentine Benedict is pretty spectacular.

605 9th Avenue North. One of our favorites. Great little shop for home-made sausages of various types (Hungarian, German, Polish, etc.). Take some home to put on the grill. They also have a few ready-to-heat specialties like stuffed cabbage. Limited hours. Check before going.

Spend at least a day strolling around the harborfront. The Dali Museum is a world-class experience, and fans of art glass will love the Chiluly Collection across from the Morean Arts Center. Exploring the new St. Pete Pier is a must. Terrific Saturday market, waterfront bars and restaurants and boutiques. (Head to The Canopy rooftop bar for a sunset cocktail.)

Sightseeing

About an hour from Safety Harbor, and if you have the time, not to be missed. Two attractions: 1. Kayaking on the Weeki Watchee River. Lots of places to rent kayaks, but definitely make reservations well in advance. Much better on weekdays. Weekends on the river get pretty crowded. 2. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. An amazing slice of "Old Florida" and more. Pay one price to get in and you get to see the Mermaid Show that's been running since the 1940's. There is also a small water park, and for an additional fee you can ride the slides, etc. WARNING: This park can reach capacity on the weekends by 9:00 AM! Either go super early, or pick a weekday. Also, smaller coolers and bags are allowed, so you can pack a lunch.

This is the big beach, just 10 miles down the road. It's got all that you would expect...restaurants, activities, crowds and expensive parking. If you are going, especially on the weekend, leave early! Traffic will get heavy later in the day.

Not like the usual aquarium, this beautifully upgraded facility is dedicated to rescue and rehabilitation of sea animals. You can see Winter the Dolphin from the feature film Dolphin Tale (it was filmed on site), along with many other sea creatures who have been rescued. Really nice place to go with the kids.

Just a short walk to this park right on the bay. Great place to picnic. There is a tiny beach area if you have a couple little ones. From the pier, you might even see some manatees. The boardwalk is a nice stroll along the shoreline.

This is our beach of choice on the Gulf Coast. It's near Clearwater Beach, but always less crowded, easier and cheaper parking and less traffic getting there. However, it does not have restaurants or other activities. Just pack your cooler and spend the day!
