Driving North of the Sault

Sightseeing

From Sault Ste Marie drive North on highway 17 for about 35 minutes watching for signs for the Chippewa River. Park in the parking area found just before the highway crosses the bridge. You can walk across the bridge for better views of the falls. You can also walk up either side of the falls, and climb on the rocks when the water is low. The trail to the upper falls starts in the parking area and follows the river upstream to the top of the main falls. The path continues alongside the river to the upper falls and does continue upstream past the upper falls if you want to explore further.

Pancake Bay is a large Provincial Park located on a south facing protected bay of Lake Superior. The wide 3.2 km long sand beach is crisp, clean, and rarely crowded. It offers ample space for sunbathing, beach combing, and in later summer – swimming.

Agawa Bay is located approximately 135 km north of Sault Ste. Marie along highway 17 in Lake Superior Provincial Park. There is a sign at the highway directing visitors to Agawa Rock. After a long, narrow, winding road you will reach the parking area. (Note: There are parking fees.) The trail to the site of the Pictographs is short, rugged and slippery more often than not. Ensure you dress accordingly (hiking shoes are recommended) and don’t forget your camera!

A long sandy beach populated with driftwood surrounds you with the true beauty of Algoma at Old Woman Bay. Looking towards the horizon, the face of the Old Woman can be seen within the 200-metre standing cliffs to the left. The bay horseshoes out to the main body of Superior to the north, leading you to Entrance Island. With easy access, Old Woman Bay makes for a great spot year-round for picnics, sightseeing, fishing, even a swim if you don’t mind the cold!

Driving north tips

There are 4 main attractions nicely spaced along the 2 hour drive north of the Sault. Leave with plenty of fuel as gas stations are rare. Bring your own snacks/meals, most restauraunts are still closed because of Covid. If something is open try the local fresh fish, or anything with dark gravy.

Driving north tips

First is Chippewa Falls (35-min), where you can hike along easy trails and the bare rock shores of this sometimes raging river. Pancake Bay is next(15-min) but I would stop there on the way home to walk it's sandy shore or swim in Lake Superior. Agawa Bay (45-min) is a more difficult hike, but well worth the effort to see the pictographs. Last is Old Womans Bay (35-min) has a long beach with sand and smooth stones.
