The Sprotbrough Riverboat company has operated passenger riverboat cruises from Doncaster since 1975. Canal and river cruises have always been a popular form of recreation on the waterways of South Yorkshire due to being very attractive and yet so close to the main centres of population. A waterway is a leisurely way to travel, which gives passengers a chance to appreciate their surroundings and view the locks, swing bridges and aqueducts, which are truly unique features of waterway travel that many people do not get the chance to experience nowadays.

Constructed in 1180 AD from local limestone the tower was saved from destruction during the Civil War and today is a compelling sight to inspire your munchkins' imaginations. Great for sketching or photographing if the kids are into either... There are some staged displays hidden away on each floor for kids to find within the keep and a 3D model of the castle located inside the visitor centre. Other features for kids include book box, activity sheets, reconstruction drawings and object handling. You are welcome to bring a picnic to snack on in the grounds but there's also a selection of hot and cold snacks including ice cream available in the visitor centre. Ball games and kites are permitted outside so bring the stuff along, or bring the pocket money and pick up books, sweets, toys and costumes from the shop, ideal for messing about (or relaxing) on the grass with afterwards.

Originally built as a shooting lodge by the esteemed Earl of Effingham, Boston Castle is a 2 story cuboid building standing tall on one of Rotherham's highest points in the grounds of Boston Park and Gardens which are themselves a lovely place to take a picnic. Recently restored to former glory, the Castle is a Grade II listed building with modern visitor facilities added in. It also has a roof-top viewing platform (accessible for an apparently small but undeclared fee) which offers splendid panoramic views over Rotherham and Sheffield. You must arrange an appointment to visit this section however and for safety no toddlers are permitted up there and flat shoes must be worn. Take a camera though! As well as the pleasing visit to Boston Castle itself, a disparate range of exciting events and activities are staged throughout the season and ideal for offering more bang for your buck to families. On-site car parking, toilet block and baby changing facilities are all available so it's a nice easy trip even with smalls in tow. Enjoy!
