Sightseeing

This is a super day out for all the family. Beautiful drive down, over the Bridge of over the Atlantic and on to the pretty slate mining village of Ellenabeich. Park your car and get the passenger ferry across to the car-free island. A half hour walk around the island is really fascinating. See the old quarries where the World Stone Skimming Championships are held and try your hand. Have a meal at the cafe and visit the heritage centre. There's also a heritage centre in the village of Ellenabeich with amazing models of the slate mines. If you are hungry on the way back there's a nice pub in Ellenabeich and another by the bridge - the Tigh an Truish.

A stunning setting with kind hearted, friendly people, superb food whether you want al fresco dining from the green hut by the ferry terminal, one of our many fish and chip shops, or amazing seafood restaurants. It's a great base to explore North, South and the islands.

Food scene

This is our favourite restaurant in Oban. It's a little more expensive than some, but service and food are wonderful. Book in advance for an opportunity to get a table with a sea view.

This restaurant gets overlooked but it's a great choice. Good variety on the menu, reasonable pricing, generous portions, friendly service, very spacious. No views but otherwise has everything going for it. We tend to choose it when we have visitors including larger parties. Probably the best indoor venue for having a chat - not too much background noise.

This is owned by the same people that own Fishouse on the pier and the food is just as good, but less formal. Pubby atmosphere with a good vibe. Check their latest requirements for pre-booking as in non-COVID times they would not take a booking for a table of less than 5.

The green hut on the pier adjacent to the Calmac ferry terminal is Oban's worst kept secret ;) At most times there's a queue and a group of travellers from all corners of the globe tucking in to fresh local sea food, using the benches or sitting on the pier walls. An experience not to be missed if you love shellfish.

Plenty of parking

The best option for parking is the Tweeddale Street car park which is a very short walk from the flat. It's free of charge between 6pm and 9am and on Sunday until 1pm. At other times it costs £1 per hour. The Rockfield Centre also offers parking though their prices have increased and it's now more expensive than the council car parks. (Note. These details are correct at the time of writing – check signs to confirm).

Ask if you need help

We love to help our visitors out with directions and tips. Ask a local person, shop keeper, postman or traffic warden (!) and they'll be ready to help as best they can. We also have Town Ambassadors who wear a sky blue coloured bib, and the Tourist Information shop close to the North pier.

Free parking

Right in the centre it's tricky to get free parking, and on the outer streets you might upset residents. However, there is a free car park at the Mossfield Stadium on the Glencruitten Road. Handy if you want to leave your car for a while and don't mind a 20 minute walk. At Ganavan Sands you get the first two hours for free, which is usually enough - but you must still get a ticket. The same applies at Atlantis Leisure Centre. You do that by putting your vehicle registration number in to the ticket machine. The tesco car park is free but don't overstay the 3 hour limit as you'll be fined.

Plan for wet weather but be ready for the sun!

Layers are best, so that you are prepared for what the weather throws at you. Many of our guests head off to Mull for the day and plan to got to Iona and Staffa. If you're not taking the car you don't want to take too much, but to get the best out of the day, have your waterproofs and something warm to wear. It's always chilly on deck and you'll want to make the most of the views. Also take a bottle of water, as shops are few and far between.
