There's more to Majorca than Tapas.
Affectionately known as Roberto's after the proprietor, Roberto, who is our friend. An excellent Italian and hand-made Pizza restaurant in the main square, 1 minute from the front door. Guests of ours get 10% off the bill so mention you are staying with us or take along one of the business cards on the little table in the snug. https://goo.gl/maps/mYUtromxeHyjeC1T9 Carrer Major, 2, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears, Spain

Awesome burger joint. They have a prodigious selection of burgers on the menu. A favourite of Robert's and I have to agree with his choice. On the edge of the market square about 4 mins walk from the house. A must visit if you're a fan of the burger. Seems to have a different name every season, but one thing stays the same - a great selection of Tapas / Pintxos to keep the munchies at bay. Sometimes playing football on the TV which Christian disapproves of, but the food at this bar/restaurant is excellent. https://g.page/BasicoGastrobar?share Carrer Major, 3, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears, Spain

What to say about Bar Maya... It's the place everyone ends up at the end of the evening, from the beginning of the afternoon onwards.. Cheap cold beers, pool table, ok snacks, always popular. Open until 3am or so depending on the crowd. https://goo.gl/maps/J23uWnrvRMpCjS7L8 Carrer del Bastió de Santa Maria, 8, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears, Spain

Fonda Llabres has to be in this guide. It's 20 seconds walk from the front of the house and is the main reason the kitchen doesn't get used more at home. From Breakfast Ingles to a late, late nightcap it's the best spot in the main square to watch the world go by while enjoying coffee after coffee after coffee... There's a hotel in the upper floors but why stay there when you can have far more space with us and all the same scenery. Don't tell therm, but it's where we go if our WiFi stops working. Insider tip - the mezzanine floor restaurant (side entrance next to the ice cream shop) is it's own separate thing and much cheaper than the tourist prices you pay in the downstairs or outside. They cater the Menu Del Dia's for locals (typically €15 for a three course lunch) but of course anyone can order it. Just make sure you're sitting in the upstairs section. Open all year round, a rarity for Alcudia. https://g.page/fondallabres?share Plaça de la Constitució, 6, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears, Spain

Popular with Robert. Bohemian atmosphere with authentic Spanish food, a chilled vibe and complementary music selection. The name translates to "Corner of the roundabout: which in no way does it justice. It's not on a roundabout, (Rather it's the circuit around the old town wall) and is a lovely quiet pedestrianised spot serving the best croquettes in Alcúdia. Really outstanding and Christian would know, he has croquetas at every tapas place where they have it on the menu. A very short walk from the house and well worth a visit even if you do get sort of jammed under the barrel style tables. https://goo.gl/maps/dzSLZedZJUpizKSD7 Camí de Ronda, 15, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears, Spain

Another excellent tapas option in town. Their Chipirones (fried baby squid) are absolutely delicious. They also do good, large mains. Santa Anna has a long season and is usually open until the end of the year. They seem to enjoy a grating playlist of mismatched music from an iPod in the corner, so grab a table outside first choice if you can. https://goo.gl/maps/TTvZthM5hynAWHXv6 Camí de Ronda, 65, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears, Spain

Alcúdia's very own Chinese restaurant and a very good one too. Perfect place to go when you fancy a culinary change. Good portions and good value with friendly multi-lingual staff too. All the staples are here and recognisable too. Christian's favourite is crispy shredded chilli beef and they also do an excellent beef fried rice too. This isn't the slightly tired, slightly greasy British Chinese takeaway joint. It's a clean cafe with lots of outdoor space under shade, situated on the edge of the plaza by the tourist office. We often lunch here with their menu del dia available for under €10 per person and are well looked after by Yann and Mae. https://goo.gl/maps/AAFXJ89NChiLWu1E8 Camí de Ronda, 63, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears

A fabulous meal at Can Grande from Private Chefs. With the growth of Mediterranean yacht culture around Alcudia there is now a well established Private Chef scene in the North of the island. We have a couple of tried and tested recommendations who will come to Can Grande and cook a sumptuous banquet for you on the barbecue or in the kitchen and they clear up afterwards! The prices are very reasonable when compared to restaurant prices and you get far more say in the menu. It's a welcome culinary development. We'll put you in touch if you're interested and leave you to take it from there.

Best place for groups to eat together. Vying to be Alcúdia’s largest restaurant it has plentiful indoor (air conditioned) and outdoor seating. Located near to Santa Anna and Bambu House this Spanish tapas restaurant has an extensive menu. The most tapas dishes Christian has seen in on place as well as conventional mains and deserts. It's likely the only place in town you'll come across a Baked Alaska and very nice it is too. If eight of you have booked Can Grande to stay and you all want to sit down together be sure to give this newcomer to the Alcúdia restaurant scene a try. https://canpantina.com https://goo.gl/maps/y3XHnzYkSwvSQWSBA Carrer de l'Hostal, 20, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears, Spain

Back bigger and better than ever before after a refit, Banana Bar/Club is the local late night clubbing venue. It's more of a complex of several bars and clubs of which Banana is the biggest and most imposing, occupying the top couple of floors above the big Burger King on the roundabout on the way from Alcudia to Can Picafort, with smaller bars and venues on the floors below. The entrance is at the top of the building, accessed via a glass elevator from street level. Very Miami Vice.... It's opposite La Previa which is a great spot for a warm-up drink if you can squeeze in. http://www.bananaclub.es/ https://goo.gl/maps/7RXzKp7mUnAXVJQr9 Av. Our pick of the beachside restaurants at Playa de Muro. Set on top of the dunes with great views, we rate their croquettes and burgers for tasty convenience. If you want the paella (2 persons minimum) you need to make a reservation and order it ahead. Gets busy at lunchtimes (as all the beachside restaurants there do). Ponderosa tends to fill with walk-ins first as people don't notice Gavella so go against the crowd and try Gavella first if you haven't reserved a table. The (often partially flooded) beachside parking is usually pretty busy. The other side of the roundabout with the main road MA-12 always has space available on the unofficial parking on the verge. It's only a five minute walk away. https://cangavella.com/ https://goo.gl/maps/oCX4QyKZDw5dX6FRA Casetes des Capellans, 174 Platja de Muro, 07420 Can Picafort, Illes Balears

Super-classy location for delicious fusion food in this intimate and all-round wonderful little restaurant in Costitx, half an hour's drive from Alcudia. A real gem. Christian's lunch was absolutely delicious and he recommends it for every itinerary. His dream Wednesday would be Sineu market followed by lunch at Notenom. Robert & Christian had lunch here again in 2021 to check it was still just as fabulous. It was. Wonderful, scenic and classy restaurant with the best views for miles around. Overlooking the bay of Pollenca, it's about 15 minutes drive from Can Grande. It'll be the views that take your breath away rather than the prices, fortunately. Take the mountain road on the way up slow, it’s narrow in parts, probably best not to overdo the Sangria before the journey down for the same reason. Ample parking at the top. Proper, genuine, authentic, British fish and chips run by Welsh emigres Lloyd and his family - Mrs. Lloyd and son Gavin. Friendly atmosphere. Top notch fish and chips and beer too. Always popular with the British expat crowd and visitors. Christian once had fish and chips there three days in a row (with different groups of people each time) which was, frankly, overdoing it a bit but worth it.

24 hour burger joint in the port and pretty much the only all-night food venue in the area. Burgers are in the traditional British kebab shop style rather than 5 Guys, but when Christian tried it, he found the lettuce was crisp and there was lots of choice. If you're too tired to speak, order by pictures. Atmosphere can be rowdy. If the plastic tables and chairs are too small a target, or you prefer to eat lying down, the concrete benches outside are very popular with patrons. https://www.burgerluna.com/ https://goo.gl/maps/1KAwgGzhG5NERmWW9 Avinguda de la Platja, 3, 07410 Mallorca, Illes Balears, Spain

Namaste is a very tasty Indian/Nepalese restaurant of the sort familiar to any British traveller. All the staples are there in this popular joint on the short busy strip running down from the main car park for Port Alcudia towards the sea. You're spoilt for choice here with pubs and good restaurants (it's opposite the WIneside, another strong option). Christian only ever eats Chicken Tikka Massala at Indian restaurants and gives this one two thumbs up, other dishes are available. Namaste is a very tasty Indian/Nepalese restaurant of the sort familiar to any British traveller. Es Verger is the rustic, traditional Majorcian food restaurant at the start of the walk to Castell d'Alaro. It's also home to Majorca's awesome speciality flaming coffee "Quemada". Christian discovered that ordering one of these entertains everyone on the surrounding tables as well as tasting amazing. Careful though, that ladle gets sizzling hot. As for food, Lamb is famously their thing. Robert suggests booking ahead if you can, they get deservedly busy. https://goo.gl/maps/akyToVYHmAsp9Nbx9 Camino del Castillo de Alaró, s/n, 07340 Alaró, Balearic Islands, Spain

One of the better dining options along the Port Alcudia strip, which can be a bit hit and miss. Quality thin base Italian style pizzas, (many choices) a full compliment of pastas and the usual schnitzel and chicken options. It is ultimately a typical Italian, but a good one and easy on the wallet. As it's on the other side of the street from the strip it's also great for people watching. https://www.don-vito.com https://goo.gl/maps/Vo8ace1NPAk8chj77 11 Carretera Artà Platja D, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears

Somewhat bemused by the very high rating on Trip Advisor, Christian & Robert tried this place for dinner. For sure the food was good and Christian's chicken tikka masala was very good, but we're not quite sure it's amongst the very best restaurants on the entire island. Patrons mainly German and English. Food good value, certainly more the affordable end than fine dining. Go after nightfall, when the ambiance transforms from typical roadside restaurant into tranquil boulevard dining. http://indianfusion.es/ https://goo.gl/maps/bDkRW1EoFdNAsyNM8 Avinguda de Mèxic, 4, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears, Spain

A must for all Germans under 30 and probably older ages too. A German beer hall in there classic style where it is Oktoberfest all year round. Christian (despite being of half German ancestry) and Robert didn't know any of the songs, but everybody else did and they were definitely enjoying themselves. The authentic German currywurst the perfect accompaniment to large steins of beer, schlager musik and bundesliga games on a massive, massive screen. Oh and the roof retracts too. OK so you know there's always that place you're told "it's where the locals go", "best kept secret", "amazing food" and you've heard it so many times before. Well, Bodega La Rambla really is that place. No, really! Christian was massively cynical and had to eat his words, along with the rest of the menu because it was so delicious and good value too, bordering he would say, on ctually being cheap, which in this day and age is a miracle. It's busy, because all the locals go there for lunch. And you'll meet a healthy smattering of tourists going there on recommendations too. But the queue is short and if you're bored or with kids, just look up and se an amazing array of sea related ephemera hanging from threads on the ceiling. Christian swears there's a spaceman amongst them, but Robert says it is a deep sea diver. and to be fair, not many spacemen have flippers on. The exterior and decor looks basic because it's really not marketing to touriss but ignore all that. The food.. the food is wonderful. Have as many plates of tapas from the colossal choice as you can manage. Via Roma, 6, 07012 Palma, Illes Balears

BLUE FLAG BEACH Miles of sand and space on this looooong beach that stretches from Port Alcudia to Can Picafort. The middle section (about 20 minutes drive from the house) is a nature reserve with a tranquil, unspoilt character. Has a naturist section in front of the obelisk. All three zones - Alcudia, Muro and Can Picafort have been designated Blue Flag beaches.

For the adventurous, the beach at Coll Baix, far on the peninsula behind Alcudia, is a worthy destination. After parking, it's a 20-25 minute hike down to this remote, unspoilt beach. Got time for a last dip before your flight home? Can Pastilla is the closest beach to Palma Airport. Surprisingly picturesque and well laid out. There is a wide sandy beach, with free showers at regular intervals by the promenade. Lots of eating options along the seafront. This is part of Majorca very popular with German visitors. This is a must. Following years of investment the town has finally opened a wall-top walk which takes you three quarters of the way around the old town. Offering spectacular views of the bay and mountains to one side and an equally fascinating insight into people's gardens and houses to the other. It only takes 20 minutes or so and is a very enjoyable way to see Alcudia from a new perspective. Involves climbing rough-hewn stairs, so not suitable for buggies/prams. https://goo.gl/maps/w38DWctmEPiLXygk7 Camí de Ronda, 35, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears, Spain

This is a drive up a mountain (park at Es Verger restaurant and eat there too for rustic, authentic Majorcan food and the famous Quemada flaming coffee). Followed by a satisfying but not short walk to the abandoned ruin of Castell d'Alaro for fantastic views of the whole of Majorca. The walk takes over an hour up. Steep -ish in parts but not too taxing, plus the path is well maintained. Put it this way, you can walk it in trainers. They say too much salt is bad for you, but not here. On the way to Es Trenc beach you pass the large salt factory where the famous Es Trenc salt is made by evaporating sea water. Gleaming white pyramids of salt give an other-worldly impression as you drive closer. The factory tour and evaporation baths make for a surprising detour. You can buy the salt there too. http://www.salinasdestrenc.com 07639, Balearic Islands, Spain https://goo.gl/maps/ZQPB7ydoiKiSujVV7

See the art and learn the story behind one of Spain's most famous artists. The Miro Museum is a cultural must see in Palma. Christian & Robert went here for a birthday treat. The standing exhibition in the purpose built gallery / entrance is best kept until last. The studio is left looking like Miro is about to come back from his siesta any minute and there's another (historic) building (the first he used for art) which still has sketches on the walls and early models. The sculpture garden outside is well worth a walk through if it's not too hot. A warning though, the complex is built onto the side of a hill and there are steps to contend with, particularly to visit the buildings from earlier in his career. Allow a good two hours. You'll feel like you've seen everything after 40 minutes and then there's the substantial permanent exhibition and sculpture garden which actually take the most time to work through. There are workshops you can book too. Free parking at the small car park opposite the entrance. https://miromallorca.com/en/ https://goo.gl/maps/Hh67WamZgL3jXYbw7 C/ de Saridakis, 29, 07015 Palma, Illes Balears, Spain

Then other wine tasting option is Vinyes Mortitx. Located up in the mountains past Pollenca it's a bit further away, but the selection is great and the service friendly. A deserving shout out to the Alcudia tourist office. They're very knowledgable about all the local activities in the area. They have a variety of printed resources and speak a lot of languages. The online companion, the Alcudia tourism website, is also really useful with a number of downloadable guides for activities. This pin drop on the AirBnB map is wrong, the Tourist Office is in the postmodern concrete building at the bus stop in old town Alcudia. https://alcudiamallorca.com https://goo.gl/maps/GxBQfd6LWXRDVkUE9 Passeig de Pere Ventayol, s/n, 07400 Alcúdia, Spain

The Knights Templar built this medieval church on the top of the hill overlooking the picturesque, historic town of Pollenca. They also built the steps up to it, all 365 (apparently) of them. To be fair, each step isn't particularly steep, but they do have a fairytale never-ending quality about them with pretty houses lining that walk up. It is worth persevering to the top and you'll get a suitably biblical sense of achievement with commanding views on three sides before heading down in about a third of the time. The whole town is very pretty and this walk is certainly worth doing. Any of the restaurants in the Plaça dels Seglars at the foot of the steps are worth stopping off in to relax after your exertions, or for some dutch courage before the climb. There is a road that takes you to the top, but that's cheating. http://www.pollensa.com/ca/places/to-visit/el-calvari/ https://goo.gl/maps/Dp1M2QvEu2ckcwGf6 Carrer Sense nom, 324, 07460 Pollença, Illes Balears, Spain

For those who love tennis or if you're happy to skip the tennis and just love Rafael Nadal, the Rafa Nadal Museum Xperience is for you. Christian has no idea where the "e' went either. Here you'll find trophies that Rafa has won (impressive), racquets that Rafa has played with (numerous), tight singlets Rafa has squeezed into (stretchy) as well as numerous life-size cardboard cutouts to selfie yourself into the tennis history books with. For those seeking something more varied than an all-tennis diet, other sports are also represented, presumably those Rafa would also have excelled at had he not been devoting so much time to be a Grand Slam Grand Master. Namely football, cycling and Formula 1. The F1 exhibit deserve special mention because as well as the cars there is a particularly enjoyable and competitive section of the Xperience given over to the Formula 1 racing simulator. You can race against friends while sitting in a model of a Formula 1 car. All in all the Rafa Nadal Museum Xperience is a worthwhile day out for sports fans and families looking for something interesting and stimulating on a wet weather day. http://www.rafanadalmuseum.com/ https://goo.gl/maps/MqwA4U5dvCM2pxAp6 Ctra. 14th Century Castle in an imposing spot looking out over Palma. Set in lush expansive wooded grounds on the top of a tall hill overlooking all of Palma and out to sea (best place for a castle really). Restful and well restored, the castle (more of a large tower really) has exhibition rooms with statues and artefacts from Majorca's Roman era through the Medieval times to the growth of tourism and the present day. It's and quick and easy walk through the centuries as you go in and out of the rooms on the first floor. The top floor is one continuous flat space where you can look out 360 degrees over the island. Caution, there are steps to climb. Not loads, but if you don't like stairs you can wander the castle grounds instead. Parking is at the very end of the road at the top of the hill. The cars parked on the way up are just going for a walk through the grounds. There's an entrance fee to the castle, but not expensive. Strong arts focus, also has a branch located within the Miro museum. https://goo.gl/maps/uH2Qgvd48tsZt3jC8 Carrer de la Missió, 15, Local 1, 07003 Palma, Balearic Islands, Spain
There's nothing to beat a bit of gastro tourism. If you're heading into Palma the San Juan food market is a mouthwatering pit stop. Massive, massive full service Carrefour Hypermarket at the FAN centre, complete with petrol station. Equivalent to the biggest Tesco Extra in the UK . Incidentally, if you're returning to the airport in a hire car, this is on your way (via the MA-30) and cheaper than the Repsol at the airport. When you exit the Carrefour filling station, turn left (opposite direction to Palma/all directions). This takes you straight to the airport via the back road which runs parallel to the motorway. https://www.carrefour.es/tiendas-carrefour/hipermercados/carrefour/coll_den_rabassa_palma.aspx https://g.page/carrefour-coll-den-rabassa-palma?share Carrer del Cardenal Rossell, 168, 07007 Palma, Illes Balears, Spain

From weekly markets to aeroplane hanger sized hyper-markets there's a shop for you.
Definitely call in here for some authentic Majorcian design and homewares. Lovely fabrics, cushions, baskets, wall hangings, table cloths etc. Antonia designs and prints the cloth herself in the traditional Ikat style that the Majorcans adapted for themselves. High quality and eye-catching. Much better than the usual tourist purchases anyway. It's tucked away in a side street. Stop off for a drink round the corner at Santa Anna when you're done. https://alcudia.propdetu.com/es/tenda/alcudiaworkshop/ https://goo.gl/maps/FhQ3S61SKmRnEhur9 Carrer de l'Hostal, 4, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears

Friendly, knowledgable family-based hardware store next to Mercadona. Sells everything from screws to sunloungers in the labyrinthine network of shelves. Sineu market is one of Majorca's major weekly markets. Held on Wednesdays 0900 - 1400. It's a particularly authentic example of a Majorcan street market. Alcúdia's twice weekly market is famous all over the island and is held every Sunday and Tuesday 0900 - 1400 (Christian thinks those days are far too close together). Lots of good fresh food, but also textiles, handicrafts, leather, wood etc. to keep the tourists happy. Plus knockoff designer labels and endless stalls of shoes around the edges. In summer the market snakes around the town and up the main street (Carrer de Moll). It draws in crowds from miles around so parking is an absolute nightmare during market times. Our friend Suzy runs the chocolate stall here but she doesn't come in high summer (they'd melt). There is a nightly conference of Alcudia's feral cat population here in the market square during the small hours. Occupying the benches and flower beds, you're followed by many pairs of eyes if you walk through the square heading home after Bar Maya https://goo.gl/maps/uEWuccADvRpePVCD6 07400 Alcúdia, Balearic Islands, Spain

The medical centre / doctor's surgery / minor injuries unit is 5 minutes walk away from the house. Go past the market square. It's where the biggest car park in Alcudia is so you've probably been next to it already. Take your passport and GHIC (UK) or EHIC (EU) card with you if you need treatment. Both Christian and Robert have had good service here. Christian was in and out in half an hour and they did a great job when Robert stubbed his toe so ask him about it. Top tip, go during the afternoon siesta time for a walk-in with little or no queue. 12pm to 2pm https://goo.gl/maps/kmJnzwyaQbP7WYUj7 Plaça Safrà, 07400 Alcúdia, Illes Balears, Spain
