St. James Town is said to be one of the largest high-rise communities in Canada, built in the 1960's and inspired by Le Corbusier's "Towers in the Park" concept. It is 19 residential high rise buildings each named after a Canadian city and was originally designed to accommodate young "swinging single" middle class residents and was key to post-recession, post-war recovery. Today the neighbourhood's vibrancy comes from the high number of first generation immigrants.

Historically significant to the LGTB community, Church and Wellesley established itself as the gay neighbourhood post the 1981 Toronto bathhouse raids. For years this neighbourhood served and continues to serve as the cornerstone of LGBT culture in Toronto: 519 Community Centre, Cawthra Park, Woody's, Pride and so many independent restaurants and shops catering to the community.
