A gourmet food hall in NE just 5 blocks away. "Bon Appétit" called it one of the 5 best food halls in the U.S. The 45 acres on the site of the original 1930s Union Terminal. So much to do here, from the rooftop bart, Hi Lawn, to all the restaurants/shops inside, it's a "scene" at all times of the year. In the summer, there are drive-in movies (that do not require a car).

At the flat, we have a full list of recommended restaurants in our "Welcome Book." We've organized the list by those within walking distance of the flat as well as within the District itself. Please feel free to ask for recommendations before your trip to DC. We are happy to offer up ideas.

Owned by folks from Ethiopia who live in the neighborhood (owner's cousins are our neighbor's across the alley and they own the neighboring restaurant, Ethiopic). Great coffee by Illy. Their "H Street" menu item is so fabulous and you won't find it anywhere else. Baked goods are delicious as well. Such a friendly place to stop for breakfast, lunch or a pick-me-up. Can get food to-go as well.

Within 6-months of its opening, the first stand-alone restaurant among the warehouses north of Florida Avenue in the Union Market region, Masseria earned RAVE reviews from the Washington Post's food critic, Tom Seistema, and in January was listed as #7 in the list of DC's 100 best restaurants. For a special evening. Walk-ins can sometimes find a spot at the bar, which is fun. Wonderful outdoor seating area in warmer months. Fantastic cocktail selections too. An oasis in a section of town that is completely deserted after 5pm at night. A five minute walk from the flat, we recommend you walk there in groups of 2 or more. Note inexpensive.

This is food and shopping and pop-ups galore. With "Lab 1270" and the "Angelika Theater" within what's referred to as the Union Market region, this is a locals complete fave. Folks from the suburbs FLOCK here on the weekends. Outdoor seating, cocktails, farmers markets, different restaurants and shopping make this place awesome! It's been transformed from a warehouse and is one big building with special events throughout the year in the space upstairs. 4-blocks away. GREAT food and ice cream. Faves for food include TaKorean, Buffalo and Bergen (great bagel sandwiches) and Neopol. But EVERYTHING should be tasted and tried. Love this place!

Parks & Nature

Only 10 to 15 minutes away by car (traffic dependent) or an easy ride by bus. This is a national treasure that few frequent. Views of the Anacostia River. Wonderful place for a walk with or without dogs (which are allowed on leash). Enormous must see. For those who want Cherry Blossoms without the crowds of the Tidal Basin, this is your spot. By 2018 there will be a new rails-to-trails path from NE directly to the Arboretum. Great place for a picnic, nature walk, etc.

Shopping

For those who know New York, Georgetown is our "Fifth Avenue," or "Madison Avenue." Shopping AND nightlife. Getting to be a lot of national chains, but you can still find local boutiques. If you want cupcakes, don't go to the stores you've heard about on national TV, go to "Baked and Wired." Much better and it's a locals place. Eat your cupcake by the canal.

Essential/Groceries

We have four supermarkets within an eight-block radius: Trader Joe's, Harris Teeter, Giant and Whole Foods. Trader Joe's is the closest -- a one-and-a-half block walk. A Millennial hub for food shopping, you really don't need to go much farther to stock up here for your visit. Note: If you'd rather not cook but don't want to eat out, Harris Teeter has a very good "5-O'clock Shop."

Great prepared food sections. Thursday nights they have a prime rib special that's as good if not better than any steak house.
