Blue Ridge Parkway closes in the winter depending on weather. Mt. Mitchell which is the tallest Peak East of the Mississippi is about 30 miles from Asheville. Mt. Pisgah and the Pisgah Inn are in the other direction on the BRP. There are hiking trails and waterfalls along the BRP.

Every time I go to the top of Max Patch I want to sing songs from the Sound of Music. About a 5-10 mile trip on a dusty bumpy forest road. Hike of 10-15 minutes to get to the top where you can walk on a portion of the Appalachian Trail. Bring your own water/food. I don't think there are bathrooms.
