Ten lifts including five triples, three quads, and two high-speed six-packs provide most of the uplift; five surface lifts serve the beginner terrain. Nearly all the terrain is lighted at night. The ski area sees an average of 135 inches of snowfall per year. Seven Springs’ summit elevation is 2,994 feet. Seven Springs has a 750-foot maximum vertical drop, which is continuous on three trails in the North Face area. A massive and thoroughly modern snowmaking system cranks out enormous amounts of snow each season, but this part of the state gets a lot of natural snow too. Thanks to this combination Seven Springs usually skis and rides for a solid four months. Skiers and riders will enjoy a variety of terrain ranging from beginner to expert as well as a nationally recognized park and pipe area. Seven terrain parks, the East Coast's only Olympic-size halfpipe, and several glades complement the more traditional terrain. There's even a special terrain park just for little kids. And of course, there's a big tubing operation. The Snowsports School at Seven Springs provides a comfortable and fun atmosphere for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. Recognized as one of the premier kids’ programs on the East Coast, Tiny Tots’ Ski School and the Youth Snowsports Academy featuring the Burton Learn to Ride program will have even the little one of the family skiing and boarding in no time at all. The Tahoe Lodge at the top of the North Face provides panoramic views and a comfortable place to eat lunch. A sledding hill off Sugarloaf Road and nearly 16 miles of snowmobiling trails are accessible from the same spot. Idlewild Park, Storybook Forest, & the Soak Zone, 25 miles Idlewild Park & Soak Zone offer visitors to the Laurel Highlands some remarkable and unforgettable gifts to take home with them - smiles on their faces, laughter in their hearts, and memories that will last a lifetime. It's no wonder that this family fun spot has been named "Best Kids' Park in the World" by Amusement Today, and "Best Park for Families" by the National Amusement Park Historical Association. What began in 1878 as a picnic and campground area has turned into one of the most popular, family-fun destinations in the area attracting thousands of visitors each year. Story Book Forest, an enchanting land where nursery rhymes and children’s tales come alive, is one of the most notable aspects of the park. Since 1878, Idlewild has been providing smiles, laughter, and memories longer than almost every other amusement park in the entire United States. Nestled within the Laurel Highlands, just outside of Ligonier, the park is rich in tradition, nostalgia, and natural beauty, and has long been recognized as one of the top destinations for family fun in the country. At Idlewild, you won't find mega-thrill rides that lay claim to be the tallest or fastest, but instead simpler fare that the entire family can enjoy together. The Rollo Coaster, built in 1938, is a long-time family favorite, with just as many moms, dads, and grandparents in line with kids as there are teenagers. Set along a rolling hillside at a very modest height of 27 feet and length of 900 feet, Rollo Coaster often serves as a child's "first real coaster" and parents want to be along for the ride during such a memorable experience. A stroll through Story Book Forest is another beloved experience for families visiting Idlewild. Featuring a winding path through a true woodland, guests visit cottages and other character scenes from fairy tales and nursery rhymes - providing a great chance for parents and grandparents to revisit their youth as they introduce their own little ones to Mother Goose, Goldilocks and much more. Story Book Forest celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2016! The park's kiddie land, Raccoon Lagoon, is one of the largest and most scenic children's areas in the country featuring 14 rides specially designed for small tykes. And make sure you take the trolley ride through Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, the land of make-believe made famous on the popular children's television show, etc. Address: P.O. Flight 93 National Memorial, September 11 Observance, Shanksville, PA, 26 miles Held September 11 Annually Flight 93 National Memorial is the final resting place of the forty passengers and crew members of Flight 93. September 11, 2001 began as an ordinary, late-summer day. As the sun rose, fair weather and blue skies prevailed over much of the country, and thousands of commercial airliners prepared for flight. But, in less than two hours' time, this seemingly routine day was transformed. Nineteen terrorists boarded and hijacked four airplanes to attack America. Nearly 3,000 people were killed when the hijacked planes were flown into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon near Washington, DC, and when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in the Pennsylvania countryside. Flight 93 did not arrive at the hijackers' intended target in the nation's Capital because of the selfless, courageous actions of those on board. When Flight 93 was hijacked, the passengers and crew members used airfones on the plane to contact the authorities and their loved ones. Through their phone conversations, they learned of the attacks elsewhere, and subsequently took quick action to prevent further loss of life. As a result of phone calls made from on board Flight 93 and from the cockpit voice recorder recovered at the crash site, we learn of the struggle the passengers and crew had with the hijackers which began in the skies over Western Pennsylvania, and ended with the high-speed crash of the plane in a desolate reclaimed strip mine near Shanksville, just 18 minutes flying time from Washington, DC. Countless lives were spared, but all on board Flight 93 were lost. A common field was transformed into a field of honor. The National Park Service, along with the Families of Flight 93, Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial, and National Park Foundation, host Annual Anniversary Observances on September 11. The public is invited to gather in remembrance and honor of the 40 passengers and crew members of Flight 93, as well as all who gave their lives on September 11, 2001. For more info, see websites: https://www.nps.gov/flni/planyourvisit/sept11observance.htm https://www.flight93friends.org Note: President Trump and Melania Trump, the first lady, took part in the Annual Observance on September 11, 2018 honoring the airline passengers and crew members who stormed the cockpit of the hijacked plane and thwarted terrorists in the skies over Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001, vowing to follow their example by standing up to evil in the world. In his first trip to Shanksville, Pa., as President, Mr. Trump led the ceremony marking the 17th anniversary of the terrorist attacks by honoring the heroes who brought down United Airlines Flight 93 into an unpopulated field rather than allow it to be used as a weapon against the nation’s capital. “We remember the moment when America fought back,” Mr. Trump said in a televised address at the Flight 93 National Memorial at the site of the crash, which killed 40 passengers and crew members. Referring to those on board who rose up that day in an effort to take back the plane, he said, “They boarded the planes as strangers, and they entered eternity linked together as true heroes.”

Flax Scutching Festival, Stahlstown, PA, 15 miles Held mid-September What is “scutching”? You can learn the answer to that question (then stump your friends) by experiencing the annual Stahlstown Flax Scutching Festival. For more than 100 years, people here have preserved the pioneer craft of scutching – the process that turns flax-plant fibers into linen cloth. Because scutching was long and laborious, settlers would gather together to do it and created the first flax-scutching festivals. Today, the Stahlstown festival is the oldest active scutching festival in the nation. In addition to demonstrating the process, the festival features antique farm machinery, arts and crafts sales, live traditional music and home-style cooking that includes buckwheat cakes and sausage. Another annual tradition is a mock American Indian raid that commemorates the early years of European settlement within the Ligonier Valley. Address: Monticue Grove, 1703 Route 711, Stahlstown, PA 15687 Phone Number: (724) 593-2119 For more info and dates, see websites: http://www.4fallfestivals.com http://www.flaxscutching.org

PumpkinFest, “A Fall Foliage Celebration”, Confluence, PA, 22 miles Held the 1st Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in October The first weekend of October marks the annual Confluence PumpkinFest. Confluence is a small town with big ideas, and PumpkinFest reflects that same vigor and pride, and the three-day festival is as much a celebration of the people as it is actual pumpkins. The best way to enjoy this PumpkinFest is to be active in it! There is judging for a photo contest, for the best recipes, and for the biggest pumpkins. There is also a pie eating contest. There is a tractor pull, a kid’s tractor pull, men’s and women’s fire truck pulls, and an antique tractor show. There is even car smashing. For those not accustomed to car smashing, imagine a baseball bat, goggles, and that old beat up sedan down the road Enjoy live music all day and join in on the square dancing and don’t miss the tractor-square dancing. This fair runs late into the evening so bring a jacket, especially Saturday when you can watch fireworks from the baseball field! Vendors are also open late selling crafts and food. The Pumpkin queen and Pumpkin Princesses will be gracing the fair all weekend too. Adding to the against-the-grain originality of PumpkinFest, consider that most festivals would have their parade at the beginning of the festival. But Confluence holds their parade at end of the festival on Sunday. In a grand finale, the PumpkinFest Parade marches out of town as confidently as fall marches in. Address: Confluence, PA 15424 Phone Number: 814-395-5242 For more info and dates, see websites: http://www.confluence-pumpkinfest.org https://www.festivalsinpa.com/confluence-pumpkinfest/

Fort Ligonier Days, Ligonier, PA, 23 miles Held Second Full Weekend in October This popular 3-day festival commemorates the Battle of Fort Ligonier, a key engagement of the French and Indian War, fought on October 12, 1758. According to many historians, the events that occurred at Fort Ligonier signified the actual beginning of the American Revolution. On the grounds of the Fort you will find a living history encampment showing frontier life, military tactics, drills, cannon firing, ceremonies, Highlanders, redcoats, French troops, frontier men and women, Indians and music from 1758. A favorite at the fort is the re-enactment of the Battle of Fort Ligonier on Saturday and Sunday during the festival. On Saturday morning a huge parade winds its way down Main Street around Ligonier's picturesque Diamond. The parade includes historic units, floats, costumed characters, the shrine units and special guests, including local TV personalities, high school and college bands and often the Marine Corps Band from Quatico, Virginia. Dozens of community food booths line the Diamond and other locations throughout town. The variety will satisfy the hungriest of appetites. Sit-down meals are available at local churches and restaurants that line the streets of Ligonier. Approximately 150 craft booths in 4 locations are linked by shuttle bus service. Talented artisans display and sell their wares including pewter figures, wicker and wood, dolls, dried flowers, paintings & prints, stained glass, jewelry, leather, baskets, pottery, blacksmithing and lots more. Address: 120 E. Main St. Ligonier, PA 15658 Phone Number: 724-238-4200 For more info and dates, see websites: http://fortligonierdays.com https://www.fortligonier.org https://www.westmorelandchamber.com/festivals--family-fun.html https://www.laurelhighlands.org/event/fort-ligonier-days/23396/

Bedford Fall Foliage Festival, Bedford, PA, 52 miles Held 1st two weekends in October For over 50 years, Bedford’s Fall Foliage Festival has attracted both visitors and locals alike. What started as an idea to bring more people to the community has blossomed into an event attended by over 70,000 guests each year. At first, tables of local wares were set up and events were held all over town, including a showcase of Bedford County Weaponry by the Shawnee Rangers at the Fort Bedford Park. Miss Pennsylvania hosted what would become the first annual festival luncheon at the Hoffman Hotel. Storefront windows were decorated to showcase the season and highlight the history of the Bedford Area. Over the upcoming years the festival would grow to include a wagon train, covered bridge tours, square dancing, and an elaborate Harvest Ball. The town square would be busy with bake sales and book sales, while the smell of homemade apple cider and apple butter wafted about. Shopping was endless with a variety of quilts on display, a Craft and Christmas Fair, and stores offering an eclectic array of art, antiques, and jewelry. Remaining true to tradition, the Festival is still organized by a small, devoted committee of local volunteers. More than 400 exhibitors line the streets each October and while visitors may no longer find a wagon train or fiddle championship, the original Antique Car Parade is still a highlight for many, and no storefront window goes undecorated. Address: Bedford Historic District, 124 South Juliana Street, Bedford, PA 15522 Phone Number: 814-624-3111, 800-765-3331 For more info and dates, see website: https://www.bedfordfallfoliagefestival.com
